Studs broke off in H block

Hey All, Friend of mine is working on a 52 H, doing an out of frame rebuild. I was over there last night and he had broken off 4 studs trying to remove them so he could have the block checked. Well anyway, does anyone have a secret to getting these out. There all on the same side, can't remember which side right now. They're all broke flush with the block. Thanks PUTTER

I have had pretty good luck with craftsman screw outs there a square shaped device that has groves on it. Iv also used easy-outs but have had better luck with the screw outs. you drill a hole in the middle of the stud adn then the screw out goues in there. Also alittle heat on the cast will help but dont want to heat that stud.

Apply heat to the stud if possible. When it expands, it will break the rust seal and can be backed out. A good way to do this is by welding a nut to the stud. The heat from welding will break it loose, even if the stud is a littl below the surface, the weld will not stick to the cast block.

You don't usually even have to wait until the stud is cool to back it out.

If a welder is not handy, and the stud is sticking out, heat still helps. One caution. I have burned penetrant which I had worked into the threads by too much heating on a really bad broken bolt which made it much tougher to remove, so after I've heated one I don't apply penetrant until I'm pretty sure I'm done heating. I also like to put penetrant on with the bolt hot so it goes in easier.

I just had this happen as well on my H. We had good luck with center punching the stud and drilling out the metal to the edge of the threads, then tapping the threads out to clean them up.

Andy Martin has it right. Those EZ outs are a total joke and will usually cause more problems than they solve.

I have had luck blasting them out with a cutting torch. Usually just have to do a quick clean up with a thread chaser... but once had to drill oversize and put in a heli-coil.

Welding a nut on may work as well - use the impact wrench on it, the vibrations work the rust loose.

Heat is always good, but keep Andy's advice about when to put the penetrant to it.

I also hae poor opinion of e-z outs or anything ilke them.

If welding is out and it does come to drilling them out, get a set of left-twist drill bits. Start small and work your way up. Heating them and cooling them first will help, but often the additional heat of drilling accompanied by the left twist will get them moving. Just make sure you're bit is centered and that you don't go too deep.

If the block is going to the machine shop anyways, just have them remove them. They can use a milling drilling machine and center drill them out. A machine shop should have lots of experence with broken bolts.
