Styled AR powr-trol pump?

I recently got a '50 styled AR. Just got the Operators manual for it. It states that to operate the powr-trol pump, that you engage the lever while turning the engine over with the starter. So, basically if you want the pump running, you have to engage it before you start the tractor?? Can't engage the pump while it's running?

Other question I have is, which way are the shutters open/closed with respect to the dash control button? In other words, are the shutters open or closed when the dash button is in, and which position when the button is pulled out? The manual talks about the button/shutters but doesn't specify. Just got the manual yesterday and wondering before I get back out to the farm and the tractor. Not sure if I can see the shutters through the front grill screen. Thank you.

Usually, you can just engage the pump while shut off, if not just bump the starter to align the gears. Would think the normal position(open) would be with the button pushed in.

Put you hand by the side of engine, just behind fan, NOT IN FAN! You'll know if shutters are closed or open by the flow of air. If they move at all! Probably could use a tissue on screen too, if it sticks, they are open, falls off they are closed!🤷‍♂️:)
