Suction screen

Hello everyone been a while since I have been on the site, so I'm doing a hydraulic oil change on my 1994 1620 ford new holland tractor, and I have been told that there is a screen on the suction side on the right rear side under the diff I can't find any place that there is access to a suction screen, I pulled the hydraulic filter housing off but there is no screen there, I Google it and they say the same thing that there is a place to access the screen under the rear diff, I would also like to mention it is a HST, I have looked at scimatics, but they don't show any suction screens anywhere, so any help would be greatly appreciated thanks rockin

I wish your luck! I'm told my Massey Ferguson 451 has a screen, I can't find it either.

I agree, tube 6 is the pump suction. Reference “B” shows it going into part 3 the filter head. I don’t see any screen shown either. Usually hydraulic pumps don’t pull through a filter, maybe in this case it does. Messicks Ford 1620 parts catalog hydraulic lines

i think you better look inside the tank.

Kind of forgot about that, it helps when you’re looking inside one once in a while. I don’t get that opportunity. I saw the spin on so that is why I said that.

It’s the rear axle housing, like some of your IHs.
Edit: But I might be full of beans. The Japanese parts diagrams are hard to follow.

Anyhow got to check the oil pickup tube as that’s where there should be a screen. And if the guy is just changing a filter for the sake of changing a filter and oil then don’t worry about it, if the hyd’s are working normally.

Ya I'm thinking there is just the spin on filter, I took the suction line off on both ends, unless it is in the suction tube itself as the tube looks like it separates at the housing , there is a o'ring on the housing end of the tube but kind of doubt that, it does'nt show any screen in the diagrams, and if it is rear axel housing I don't see any place to access it, Thank for the help

I don’t know if that is a fact about the axel housing. I just thought the diagram was showing the rear case. Where is that filter located on the tractor? Where do you add fluid.

The filter is located on the rear right side in front of the axel housing, and the hydraulic oil filler is behind the seat on top of the 3 point hitch housing.

I would think that confirms the fluid is pulled from the housing.

Hydrostatic transmission is getting noisy when going forward, and pump is getting a bit noisy, like there is a restriction somewhere there are test ports for checking the hydraulic high and low pressure systems, that will be my next step.

The hydro may or very likely has its own internal fluid and could actually be sealed from the hydraulic lift fluid. I can’t tell from the parts catalog. Anyway I would say there is a good chance the hydraulic system has nothing to do with the operation of the hydrostatic drive. It’s pumping and drive sections are internal to the unit.

One of those spin-on filters IS the strainer...Just a fine screen in there , nothing more. The other one is a real filter and covers trans and hydraulics.

The whole tractor from the bell housing back uses the same oil.

Cavitation caused by heavy/wrong oil or plugged strainer will make a HST noisy... change the o and filters first and see if the noise goes away.

Read on McDuff! When I read his first sentence and he uses the present tense “doing” to me that says he is in the process. Later he says he removed the hydraulic filter housing, which I don’t think you would want to pull off when the system is full of oil. Do you know does the HST just set in a flooded section and draw in hydraulic oil as needed? I know the majority of oil in them is just cycling around inside between the pump and drive section.

There are 2 hydraulic filters, one from the main resevoir, the other filter is on the left side attached to the engine block it, is for the charge pump which is on the front of the HST transmission, it is a low pressure system, the charge pump delivers hydraulic fluid to the HST transmission, the pressure onthe charge pump is only 146 pd and the HST is 3000, the suction line from the reservoir run to the hydraulic pump on the side of the engine, but t's up to the HST transmission so everything is fed from the main reservoir.
