super 88 burning points

i picked up a super 88 in the summer from a guy, and i got it running that day after a 18 year rest
so I took the carb off rebuilt it
rewired with new gauges and turned to 12V Neg ground with an alternator
whole electrical system is new and no matter what it burns points within minutes
have a resister on the coil even and no matter what i can not get it to run now.
i have new points that im putting in tonight and seeing if i can get it to start and run well enough.
shes a true fence row tractor but Not a dent on it
and a true steal for the $250 i paid for it

i put the resister in last night and havnt put a new set of points in yet, i have to run to the store to get some but before i had full
battery power going into the distributor from a "internally resisted" coil

I remember having a condenser issue and it caused points to burn. Sorry to say thats been about half a hundred years ago and i cant remeber the cure ask a good parts man

.

Wrong voltage coil, wrong ballast resistor, failed ballast resistor, wrong wiring (ballast resistor bypassed), wrong value condensor, failed
condensor(unlikely, if unnecessarily changed at evey contact point change!).

Even if points are set too narrow, they should last more than a few minutes running

The Kettering ignition system is well tried and tested (billions of times over?), and is simple. So fault must be simple, too!

but it runs like hell for a few minutes...lol

I once wired a house wrong, the 2-110 lines and the neutral were all black and I switched
the neutral with a 110 making everything 220. I hit the cop saw and it ran like the
dickens. I thought, now, that thing hasn't run that good...ever. I knew what I'd done.

Obviously too much voltage...Fun working on things someone else has worked on isn't it.

When you bought this was there a shop with all kinds of spare parts laying around...lol

do let us know.

its a 12V Coil from John Deere, Wired correctly as it completely redone by the wiring diagram, It was a 6V tractor and i removed the generator installed a Alternator 10si, install the ballest resister between the coil and the distributer

Resister should be on the ignition side of the coil not the distributor side. You might also try a different condenser because a bad condenser will also cause that

well i got it in the shop yesterday afternoon after unpacking half the shed to get it out, pulled it into the shop, rebuilt the carburetor, changed out the points and condenser, filed the cap, turned the gas on, hit the start button and it was running, got the carb tuned to run perfect, went to back it out of the shop a couple hours later afte putting the sheet metal back on, and the second it hit the cold air outside. bam she was sputtering and spiting at anything over an idle. anything over half thottle it fell flat to its face. cleaned another shop bay and pulled it back in, cause i had to get the plow truck in to fix the plow wiring. i was ------ off at it at this point so i didnt look into it anymore.
im kicking around electronic ignition
and also i now noticed the front crank seal and oil pan gasket are leaking after having it running again
