Super A Ammeter repair or replace

Hello,

I needed to replace the instrument panel on my Super A as the steering wheel shaft bracket cracked off. It was welded once. In removing the ammeter the left stud looking at it from the rear came off. It's the original ammeter. Can it be resoldered and still work or do I need to replace it? If I can resolder it, how do you test it off the tractor?

Thank you,

Dan

its junk. I check mine by removing a batt. cable with tractor running and stick it between cable and batt. post.

I do not agree with rustred's test. If it has an alternator, dangerous voltages can be created, as well as alternator damage. If generator, excess voltage can be created, but not dangerous amounts. The test I approve of is to use a headlight bulb with jumpers from the non grounded battery terminal through the bulb then to the meter, then to ground if it lights the bulb, it should register about 2 to 4 amps. If the bolt is twist leaving one nut remaining, silver soldering a brass screw onto the terminal will work. Flatten the old nut/broken stud with a file to create a fresh surface. Take a 10-32 X 1/2" long brass screw, and flatten the head of the screw so it also has fresh clean material. Use real silver solder because it is way harder than lead tin, or silver/tin solder. With the right flux and solder, it works slick. the solder will be sa strong as the original bolt. Jim

don't have to agree but I have done that to see if my ammeter was ok. and it was a generator, these tractor don't have an alternator unless it was installed and it takes about 5 seconds or less to find out. not like your letting the tractor run w.o. t. for an hr. with no battery in it. and it does work. plus have changed battery's many many times with the engine running on tractor. would like to know what damage this is causing, ? generator is producing the power to keep tractor running.

I think you and I could do what you indicate because we both know what a generator is, and all the assorted issues. My point is that 80% of the people that ask electrical questions do not. And we can't see what they are working on or what they know. So I error on the side of caution. Jim
