super a hydraulic pump rebuild

I'm in the process of rebuilding the hydraulic pump on our super a. I was able to ID the pump as pesco, got the rebuild kit from Steiner. Got the speedi-sleeve on the shaft since it had a wear groove on it, that I'm thinking was causing the hydraulic fluid to leak into the crankcase. I plan on using motor oil instead of hydraulic oil in the future.

Here is my problem. If put the pump back together, the pump shaft turns freely by hand. However, when I tighten down on the cap screws to secure the cover to the pump body, the shaft then does not turn freely. Quite a bit of resistance to turning. Those cap screws aren't tight, just snug.

I have checked the bearings to be sure they are in correctly and that they are all the way seated...they seem to be.

Everything is prettly well coated with oil.

Any thoughts?

Thanks guys.

It must turn by hand when tight. Make sure the speedy sleeve is not touching the bearing, or other gaskets/parts are now "longer"
than they were. A tight pump might wear in, but it might be putting metal into the system when it does. Jim

Thanks for the reply Jim

I took it apart again and just spent more time looking at how it goes together and what parts fit where to allow it to turn freely.

Then I realized my mistake. I misread the instructions, mixing up the bearings.

Now it's back together turning easily by hand.

Best,

Scott
