hi everyone ,
I've got a super a I just bought that's been some what gone through . Tractor runs great and seems to make good power transmission is really quiet .
My problem or issue is this , we just fabbed up a 3 point hitch so we can use our finishing mower and Covington planter.
Today while testing it out after about 5 min it pushed some water out the radiator cap.
Stopped and checked but the cap as barely hot .
Went back to cutting it did it a couple more times each time i could touch the cap without a problem.
It's hot but not scalding if that makes sense.
After shutting it down and letting it cool the water level is still full .
My cap does have a spring on it if that helps. And the spring seems to have plenty of pressure .
Since this tractor doesn't have a water pump I'm kinda confused on what's normal ?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The Super A uses a thermosiphon system to circulate the coolant. Provided everything is in good shape, they work well but they have a few peculiarities. One of which is you need just a little more coolant in the system than it takes to cover the tubes in the radiator. There is quite a high degree of expansion and it will push any excess out if they?re overfilled. Another thing to be aware of is that when filling with an antifreeze mixture you should always mix it in a bucket before putting it in the tractor. Otherwise it can stratify and not circulate properly. If you put a properly mixed solution in and the tractor doesn?t seem to be getting too hot then either drain a little out or keep going until it stops pushing fluid out. They also sometimes make funny noises when you shut them off. Hope this helps. Sam

I bought a Super AV from a scrap yard. I got it running but it tried to overheat after running under very little load. Turns out the block and head had a lot of silt (mud) in it. I made a scraper out of a piece of heavy wire and hooked the mud out of it. It runs fine now. As already mentioned, no water pump on these old girls. Mine gets a lot of looks at tractor shows. It's painted as a demonstrator and has BN axles and drawbar. I added a Buddy seat on the left complete with IH seat, platform, pedals, steering wheel & shaft.

As tractorsam said, overfilling will push out excess water. My A use to puff out a little water during hotter months. I would refill as required. I finally got an owners manual which states "Fill radiator to slightly below filler neck. Filling radiator to this level will allow for expansion of the coolant under normal operating conditions." I had been filling to the top of the neck.

Note that A's & Super A's did not come from factory with a heat gauge. I asked an old IH mechanic once if I should install one on my SA. He told me he thought it didn't come with heat guage because IH design engineers didn't want you to know how hot they ran!!

well after using the tractor for a lengthy session with a scrape blade it didnt push out anymore water so i assume it was just over filled.

i ordered the touch control temp gage and the water temp gage and mount just for tje heck of it. my tractor originally had the touch control gage but its wire was cut and the gage is missing .
i know the gauges may not show much change but my son will get a kick out of us adding them .
