Super C carburetor...

I installed a NEW carb on my Super C this week; runs ok at idle but "surges" constantly at half throttle or more no matter where I adjust the screws! Why cant something ever just work right??? Thanks.

Are you sure the surging is the carburetor and not the govenor? Our does it but the source is the govenor.

you would need to follow the governor settings from the manual . plus post where you have the carb adjustments at, as that the standard procedure when adjusting a carb.

iI BELEVE THE SURGE PROBLEM IS THE SURGE SPRING IN BOTTOM OF GOVENER TAKE THE NUT OFF BOTTOM OF GOVNER VTHEN TAKE SCREW OUT POSIBLY SPRING IS BROKEN IF NOT PUT BACK IN PLUS ONE TURN FARLER PUT NUT BACK ON .

Doesnt matter where I set the screws; no but it had an older carb on it and it ran fine...just leaked and I wanted a new one....now it surges. I will check out the gov later today. Thanks

Run it full throttle grab the rod that goes from the carb to the governor and hold it from moving. If it still surges it is in the carb adjustment. Keep it at full throttle turn the knob on the carb in until the engine starts what I call ..deep hunting.. as in on the slow down it sounds as if the key was shut off. From this point turn the knob out until it smooths out. Continue turning out until it starts running uneven again. Turn in slowly until the surging just starts to go away. Somewhere within a turn of this spot is where you should be able to run it.

What happen if you take the air cleaner tube off?? Does choking it hurt or help??

If choking it has no effect then good chance you have a bad carb because it should kill the engine if full choked or at least have a lot of black smoke

medium throttle- surging- I can grab the governor shaft and hold it and it runs fine- no surge- let it go and still runs fine....if I move the shaft at all then starts surging again...thanks.

Have you checked for vacuum leaks at the carb mount and the manifold

If you have the rod to carb adjusted to a free pin with throttle wide open, carb wide open and it is nice and smooth when hooked up not running, go for the surge spring on governor.

A good governor on a C will bounce once or twice when opened up to full throttle. Keeps them snappy, not doggy that way.

This assumes your carb is adjusted right also like explained below.

If your old carb. worked good and you have the linkage adjusted like Pete said I would say you have a new carb. problem, not a governor problem.
What kind is that new one? never seen one like it. I installed a new Zenith on my Super C about 25 years ago, works perfect, never a drip out of it and I never turn the gas off.

His picture shows a Marvel Schebler carburetor. I see both Zenith and Marvel for sale at Stieners.
Don't like to say it but Marvel is not my favorite on anything. Maybe a John Deer 3020 but they never could make them run right with Zenith or Marvel. (for very long anyway).
