Super C Farmall

I bought this super C last week with the motor tight. I was able to get the motor freed up by taking the starter off and using a pry bar against the flywheel through the hole.

Is this a generator or alternator with an external regulator? This is confusing because it says 14 volts on the tag, but it had a 6 volt battery in it.

I would say it is an alternator by the looks of it. With a 6 volt battery I would wonder if the battery is god or if the alternator is not working unless it has been reworked to just charge the 6-7 volts needed for the battery to work.

I just bought this tractor last week. Motor was stuck, but is now free. Gas tank had about 3 gallons of nasty, nasty gas in it. The sediment bulb was packed full of gray dust. I've never seen that. I'm probably going to have to hot tank the gas tank to get it clean. Thankfully it looks solid with no rust on the outside. I'll convert it to 12 volts before even trying to start it. I've got the carburetor in the ultrasonic cleaner now.

I’d suggest starting it on battery first , what if it has engine issues ? compression test ,leak down test , something , a lot time money rapped up in 12 volt conversion .
Suggest
You had valve cover off ? Lube valves
You taken plugs out and look into cylinders for issues with water ,rust , something was causing thight lube cylinders.

Old ethanol gas.

A battery and coil are all that are needed to start the engine on 12 volts vs 6. The 6 volt battery was junk, one of the terminals appears to have been broken down under the case, so I was going to have to get a battery anyway, might as well buy a 12 volt instead of a 6 and change the coil. The rest of the conversion can be completed afterwards.

The story is that it sat for about 2 1/2 years and got tight sitting. Took the spark plugs out and poured oil in each cylinder and let it sit for several days before trying to free it. Also poured oil down the exhaust.

Also suggest you start on 50 to one premix for extra lube top end . Got that from vice grip and local tractor dealer .
I also suggest change oil , hand crank (or starter) with plugs out till it runs out rockers to prime. My thoughts ! Good project, thanks for posting

The 50:1 premix is a good idea, thanks.

Caterpillar equipment if it didn’t say cat on it and someone replaced them often the 24v were a leece Neville. I believe prestolite bought them out a long time ago and then they themselves were bought out. I used to see the tag with both names on it prestolite and Leece Neville

Somebody spent some money on the conversion or more likely had a good one laying around off of a truck or???

Can those be set to output only 7-8 volts for a 6 volt system? I ask because the battery was a 6 volt, not a 12. I have not identified yet whether the coil is 6 volt or 12, been too busy since Saturday with other projects.

I am hoping someone else would chime in on this as to whether or not what looks like a stock regulator of some sort could control the field in that alternator to maintain a charge on a 6 volt battery. It may be the previous owner didn’t know exactly what he had going on there, or maybe they just stuck that battery in there thinking the tractor appeared more complete and sellable with a battery in it. I personally would pull that monstrosity off of there and install a Delco 10si 3 wire and basically never have to worry about the charging system again. Although if it could be made to work it would be an interesting conversation point on the tractor.

What s the diameter of the alternator pulley ?
I think I see the r2 (revision after serial number 114 xxx ) larger diameter fan/ generator pulley on yours
