Super C Regulator setting and values

Hi,

I just got my Super C charging again but it is with my original voltage regulator. The main problem was an incorrect generator belt (too long).
I recently purchased a new/old stock Delco regulator and when that part was installed it did not charge. It's possible that the new part could be bad or it was a return or even an incorrect part.
The part on the box is 1118982. The part looks correct.
Anyhow, the problem with this regulator could simply be the setting of the points.
Does anyone know an approximate feeler gauge thickness to achieve around 7.5 v charging voltage? Also, is there a setting for for the second coil to determine the charging current?
What is the correct charge current. Anyone know the resistor value on the back of the unit?
I also have an aftermarket regulator that I need to check and see if it works - maybe it also needs the point gap adjusted.
The Super C has a Delco generator and has a water pump.

Thanks,
Mike Uschak

The "relay" with the points "open" is the cutout, it's function is to connect the generator to the battery when it is charging at a voltage above battery voltage, and disconnect it when charging voltage falls at low idle or shutdown.

If it DOESN'T disconnect at shutdown the VR and generator will be overheated and possibly ruined and the battery will be run dead.

The other relay is the voltage regulating relay and is adjusted by varying tension on it's coil spring.

Before you start doing any intrusive adjustments under
the lid of you new regulator, first first did you polarize
the system? This is done by momentarily shorting the
Bat. and Gen. terminals on the regulator, you should
see a small arc or spark as you do this. Then if you get
no joy I would suggest going through the ..Generator
Charging System Troubleshooting Guide.. another
poster here on YT has laid out. See link. If you want a
PDF of a more in-depth manual on generator charging
systems published by IH email me. Email should show
on Classic or in Modern to see it you need to log in.

If the NOS regulator sat on a shelf
somewhere, FOR YEARS (likely), there is a
chance someone bought it at some point in
time, tried it out, fried it, and then
returned it. Said they didn't need it after
all (lied), and got thier money back.

Most places have a no return policy on
electrical components because of this. But,
... factor in the turn over and new hires
working at the parts counters, one could of
easily took one back in on return, not
realizing this. Or played the buddy system,
if that customer was a friend.

I don't know of the point gap specs to
relay to you. But, those really should of
been pre-set. And not needed any tampering
with out of the box. If they now, need to
be re-set, it's because somebody tampered
with them, and didn't need to.

Voltage regulators are real sensitive. It
takes very little to ruin one. Something as
simple as, hooking battery up backwards, or
not polarizing the generator when you need
to, is all it might take to ruin one. Or,
... hooking the wires up to one wrong. Or
trying to jump a 6 volt system, with 12v.

Also, most regulators are specific to go
onto positive, or negative ground systems,
And are not universal in that aspect. You
might check that out. What your system
actually is, and what systems your
regulators are actually for. Your tractor
could of been possibly converted to
negative ground, with old regulator
likewise being negative ground (opposite of
originally). And your new NOS regulator is
for positive ground as it should be, but
wrong for how your tractor is set up now.
That's only one of many possibilities. And
not to be assumed of what's going on.

If I had to guess, the NOS regulator is
faulty, or been ruined, rather than having
messed up point gaps, if its the regulator
itself. But, that is only my guess, and
definitely wouldn't have to be the case.

Many thanks to all those that responded to my question.
I'm going to polarize one of the new regulators and see if they will work. The tractor is running well with the original regulator and I
have a field to mow.
The polarizing will have to wait until that task is done.
This regulator subject is a real learning experience and I'm grateful to others on this forum that have answers.
