What are the advantages/ disadvantages of a wide front end vs. a narrow one?
I'm still looking for a Super C and trying to decide.
Thanks,
Joe

Well, your going to using it for haying, etc, its nice to be able to run over the swath with out hitting it with wheels, and its safer i think, it's better kids tractor.

Narrow front will turn much shorter. Narrow front has fewer parts to wear out. Narrow front will accomodate just about any kind of row crops, as well as handle haying chores.

Wide front is NOT more stable, nor is it any safer.

It can be argued with geometry diagrams that the tipping point of a narrow front is greater than a wide. In fact it is just a small difference in pivot point while tipping over. Probably just a few degrees of tilt. If the tractor is in a tipping situation, it is being driven into danger. If the wide front gives a sense of security, it is more likely to be placed in that position. The tipping point of a narrow front is on the rigid down hill front tire. on a wide front, it is at the pivot point of the front axle. This is hgher in the center of gravity, but closer to the center of the tractors CG.
The narrow front also stores better in a shed, turns tighter with wheel brakes, steers easier at low speeds and stopped, and has fewer wear parts. Jim

TO be honest, I have a C with a wide, and a SC with a narrow. I think I would run a wide if I HAD to choose! For field work, the narrow on the SC is fine, but in the snow, or sometimes even haying, it tries to slide out a little. Also, one thing to remember, is that the narrow fronts on those SC's turn REALLY easy! Which is very nice....

I like the looks of the wide, plus, it handles the baler a little better, however for field work, I think they are the same....

Wide fronts grip better in nearly all conditions as well...

Thanks everyone. I like the looks of a wide better too, but it seems the only ones I can find are the narrow. Plus, I'll be using it with a belly mower on it so I would want sharper turns where I'll be mowing at. Looks like its going to be a narrow one.

In addition to what's already been said, the wide steers harder and takes 40 acres to turn it around, but the wide rides smoother than a narrow. I converted my SC from narrow to wide because I like the looks and it's a tractor ride machine.
