Super H Starting Issues

Super H, has always started real easy, never really needed any choke or anything. Until recently, now itll crank until it floods. Itll only start after a shot of either (which I hate to do) or if its pull started. Any suggestions as to what may be the problem all the sudden? Thanks

we are not god here. we need info. not from what is is posted, now way of telling unless a person writes 2 pages. check your spark , check your fuel flow. the report back with your findings. when was it tuned up? i dont know what u dont know. pull the coil wire out some to see the spark while cranking it over,... is it blue and u should hear it also. check your points as a first thing for setting .020 gap and condition.

I had the same problem with my Farmall H about two years ago. It had always started right up. Then all at once it didn't want to start. Looked at the spark and the spark seemed very red and not nice and blue. Checked the points and they looked good. So I had an old IH condenser that I had saved so I replaced it. Tractor started right up and still starts right up now after almost two years of running on this old IH condenser. So that is something you might want to check or try. Al

Does it start right away if you pull it? Not sure what your distributor is like but if it starts right up when being pulled I would check what ever advances the spark in the distributor. As said previously, check spark when running the starter.

What may be the problem all of a sudden? Literally anything. Could be fuel, could be spark, could be timing, could be valve clearances... It could even be a weak battery and/or a bad cable connection.

The best place to start is at the beginning. Basic engine troubleshooting 101.

Hit send too early...

Cranking until it's flooded... Are you laying on the choke when this happens? It should not flood without choke no matter how much you crank, so that points toward a carburetor problem. Stuck needle and/or float.

Either dries out the cylinders, and despite what the old-timers claim it does NOT hurt the engine. It's just inconvenient to have to pull the intake pipe and spray ether every time you need the tractor.

Im thinking its not flooding because it wont fire on ether if its flooded... but if it starts when you pull it or with ether, I would say you have weak spark ; the ether is easier to burn with weak spark, likewise no additional load on ignition system when pulling, would make the spark stronger. Or, if you have a magneto, the impulse coupling is not functioning and consequently too low magneto speed while cranking. Another possibility is water in the gas... requiring additional outside help to encourage the engine to take up its cycle.

Try this ,run the tractor out of gas at shut down by closing the fuel shut off .
At a cold engine start up , open the fuel shut off . Wait couple of minutes to fill bowl .
Crank engine a few rotations ,then pull choke rod out rotating engine close after one rotation .
I think it will start right up for you .
Did you change gas recently ?
A ten percent alcohol mixture gas ,will change the float setting ,might contribute to the issue of flooding . Just a thought also for you to consider .

Still running 6 volts?

Discovered on my dad's Jubilee that it was a tough tractor to get started when on its original 6 volts. I know that if the system is in perfect condition, 6 volt is perfectly fine. Discovered when I would direct start with a 12 volt battery to the starter motor, the tractor immediately started, even on the coldest winter day. Converted the tractor to 12 volt and never looked back. Have learned that if your 6 volt system is struggling, too much power goes to the starter, and bareley enough goes to the ignition system to make a decent spark, which is why a direct-to-starter jump start always fired it up in a couple revolutions.
