12v conversion previously done. What battery do you recommend. Box is under seat. Man I got it from said he didn?t put anything bigger than 550cca. Said it tore up starter

I have always used a group 27 whit the highest cranking amps i can get. Yep over time you will eat a starter as 99% of them are the org. 6 volt starter . That is the price ya pay to up grade to 12 volts , BUT if you keep the tractor in tune and she firers straight off with out extended cranking they will not eat a starter out for a LONG time . the old M's thru 450 when kept up on tune ups even when they were 6 volts if ya could get it to turn over just one fan blade they would start . Having the nack of tune ups is becoming a lost art , getting the carb set , the timing just wright setting the points and valve adjustments are not in everybodys ability's . Something that i have been doing since 1961 , thats a lot of years , lots of plugs and points and valve settings and carb adjustments.

Yes - a group 27 battery will fit IF your SM is stage II (has the battery box under the seat).

As for feeding the 6 volt starter 12 volts, the OEM 6 volt starter on my SM has worked on 12 volts for 30+ years with no issues.

If it fits, and it does on my SMTA, the Group 34/78 battery which also interchanges with a full size GM truck.

Just in case, easy to swap, if a need suddenly comes up.

I use a group #65, same battery as a '95-'97 Ford diesel pickup uses two of, had a DieHard Gold rated 1000 CCA in my stage 2 Super H, battery box seat base for 20 years. Same battery for 20 years. I have a quick release battery cable clamp on the ground cable to disconnect the battery any time the engine is off. The battery stays charged for 6 months or longer when disconnected.
