super M oil pan plug

I recently aquired an early farmall super M (1952). When I went to change the engine oil, I found a badly stuck drain plug. In fact, I had to remove the oil pan to get it out. Was surprised to find a 3/4" pipe plug in it. In searching the net, it seems like this should have been a hex head fine threaded plug. I see no evidence that the hole had been re-threaded with a pipe tap by someone. It looks original... I've been around IH's most of my life and never noticed this before. Did IH use pipe plugs in the oil pan drain on some models?

it is correct, but they must have made that change in the super line at a serial # break. I have 2 supers and one has the pipe thread and other one has the fine thread and brass washer. the serial number on this one starts 394... and the other one starts 282...

(quoted from post at 13:51:21 11/02/19) As noted, it is original. A fix is to buy a new pipe plug, and weld a hex on the square, or buy a square socket to fit. Jim

Or just buy a 3/4 inch hex head pipe plug. Might not find one at Lowes or Home Depot but a good hydraulic supply shop should have them among many other places. If you like Graingers or McMaster Carr both will sell you one!

Engine serial number 38333 was the start of the C-264 hex drain plug with washer oil pans. 52 model was below that.
