Super M propane ?

Actually I have three questions. I know this has been discussed before but does anyone know or is there a resource somewhere that tells the number of SMs that were built in the factory as propane units (having the cross mounted LP tank).

2nd question is in regard to seeing a SM on propane advertised as a 1954 model but did not have a TA. I am wondering if this was a 1953 build that was not sold until 1954 thus it has always been considered a 54 model tractor or did IH build any SM's in 1954 that weren't MTA's?

3rd question - if it is assumed that a model 300 was just the progression of an H and the 300 was sold in a propane version, was there ever a SUPER H with factory installed popane

Don't know the number built with IH type cross tank. Yes they made regular SM tractors in early 54 at farmall works. No Louisville SM built in 54 although you see them advertised as 54 sometimes. No LP built at Louisville. No SH LP from IH. Probably they built a SH test tractor at one time but don't know of a survivor.

I did see a H,on LP gas in cotton country, it had all faded together so it had been on there a long time,even though it was a kit that somebody had put on. It was sitting at the gin, suppose it was used to pull the trailer's around.

I thought the place in Texas that did the LP ones the tank set the long way.

Yeah, those were SMTA's, some done at San Angelo and some in Lubbock. I believe they sold kits too as I have an M conversion somewhere with a lengthwise tank from the San Angelo company.

LP built between serial numbers 28175 and 52627 would look like this. Below 28175 center housing won't have the raised bosses on the side below starter and uses 2 bolt starter mount instead of 3. Above serial 60001 or SMTA tractors the center housing is longer and a little different shape. Few of them built without a T/A in 54. There's some SMTA tractors out there with the cross mounted tank like the SM factory tank.
Any factory built SM LP between serial numbers 51977 and 52627 were built in calendar year 1954. All types were included in the serial numbers not just LP. Happen to know 52627 was a gasoline tractor.
Some SMTA were converted with longwise tanks and as said above some around with crosswise tank.
Some say they were SMTA LP built at farmall works. Saw no proof of that myself but can't say for sure they are wrong.
