I brought out my dads SMD this morning. It has not run in 30 years. Motor still turns free and has good compression. It was parked because of a bad water pump and tires. Money was short then and it was not needed. I stared to get things freed up and to clean the fuel system. My question is will a water pump from a super M gas work? I was given a good one. And where is a good source of parts for this some what rare tractor? I never worked on a red tractor older than a 656.

The engines are as different as can be, no interchangable parts (spark plug wires and points in the distributor might be common). Bates Equipment in Indiana is one possible location. Jim

I'm almost positive the water pumps are interchangeable. I would double check the parts list on the Case IH website.

The water pumps should interchange between the M-gas burners and the diesels. Part numbers are the same in the parts book.

Most any needed engine part is still available from either CIH or an aftermarket source if your wallet can sustain the removal of large bills at a rapid pace. What can't be had new can be found used. Finding a good cylinder head if you ever need one may be a challenge.

Carb parts are still available. I don't know if the switch-over parts in the manifold are still available.

There are some shops that will work on the pumps and injectors yet.

Case-IH should still have alot of parts available yet.

AG PARTS LTD. dealers have an engine parts supplier that will have parts available and access to a diesel shop that will work on the nozzles/pumps.

Central Fuel Injection Svc. in Iowa will work do diesel fuel system work as well.

Bates Corp. will have new/reman/used parts available.

The main thing now is cleaning carb and injection pump, fuel tanks, once you get fuel systems cleaned up, next is to check for spark, these motors are complex and it takes a lot of tinkering, and knowing a few tips to get them going. If you have good compression on gas side thats a big step in the right direction, keep us posted, and good luck, there is no better satisfaction when you get them going on both fuels

I always thought that the gas & diesel water pumps were not interchangeable too but I just checked my IH parts book……..and it does use the same pump body. I didn't go through each individual part but the ones I looked at were the same for both tractors as well. So it looks like they should swap.

What's wrong with your the pump on the Super MD? They come apart easily and internal parts can be replaced. It is common for them to leak and they often need the gland nut tightened or packing added. You might know this already, but thought I should mention it in case you didn't. These old water pumps are not like the modern exchange units of today--they were intended to be repaired instead of replaced.

Thanks for the information guys. I have the diesel side pretty well cleaned up. It was in remarkably good shape considering how long it has set. I haven't messed with the gas side yet. I am kind of concerned about it but I think I can get it going. I hope to try to get it to start this week if time allows me to work on it.
