Super MV LP

A guy I know has a super m LP high crop for sale. It's been converted to gas but still has the LP manifold and engine tag. The way it looks it has original rubber as well and is in fairly good running condition.
My question is the price tag.
He wants 11,750 for it.
Would it be a good investment?

In my opinion, tractors are a hobby, not an investment. Since it is a high crop, the price may be legitimate, but someone else needs to figure the price as I am not interested in high crops. I have 8 "low crops". I don't expect to make a dollar on any of them, considering the expense of restoration.

In my opinion it is not. Though not a common tractor, it is not a SMTAVLP. Propane has good engine life but limited run time between fillings. Investments are common profitability is not. Jim

I would say only a handful of tractors are investment grade and that's drawing from all makes and colors. If you just like old
tractors it might be a way to "store" money. Honestly the old tractor market has been softening for several years.

Depending on condition that might be a fair market price but I wouldn't expect to be able to make much on that one. You would have
to score a "barn find" for $500 bucks or something. It does happen but most of the money has already been made on the old tractor
market.

Let me try again. I use the term investment as I think I'm going to buy it and restore it then sell it. However...I never sell them. I'm really just asking if it's a good deal. Should've made myself clear the first time

I would think it was not a good deal. If it was 6000, and if it fit into a portfolio of tractors you own and restore, OK. but at the stated price it should be way perfect and have documents to prove engine rebuild. Painting and putting tires on it to make a modest show/Keeper out of it will be an added cost. Jim

Understand now.

I think the price is a bit high. I've seen plain old MV's for half that in Texas.

I like LP and have "The whole set" from SM through 450 and I wouldn't pay half that for a SMV LP. But to be fair I'm not really
into MV's in the first place.

I seen a late 51 M, sell today, wide front, it looked like brand new, 4 new tires, this guys uncle bought it new in 52 he said, He didnt make any money on that investment. {273xxx serial number]

I am a I.H. propane aficionado ! Have 3 I.H. & one I.H.66' 3/4 ton p.u. with factory propane. A L.A. case & MM UTN on factory l.p.
A S-MV on factory propane with good tags in IMHOP is worth good money! Perhaps very close to what he is asking depending on condition of total tractor.
However ,being its been converted to gas, For me it lowered price to very low . He probably did away with original Ensign equipment ,Tanks, Brackets ,etc. How about engine did he replace the l.p. valves and seats etc all the things that made it valuable.
I would value it as a non restored SM gas value, then add value of drop axles & front axle, and if you value or collect l.p.'s add the value of a good tag. If your going to leave on gas then the tag is wasted.
Its beyond me why someone would ruin that tractor when S-MV's on propane are hard to locate ,not many were made.

Not a good investment! Especially at asking price after he has DEVALUED it going L.P. to gas.
These old tractors are a labor of love. If you just rattle can restore it you may make it worth less! If you do a real restoration and back it up with documentation You'll receive more but not enough to cover expense.
If I was buying it I would give you more if you left it alone because then I know what I have. I want them restored my way if I am going to put my name on them. If done correctly you'll have something to be proud of and when you are ready to sell it may not bring what you want but QUALITY always sells, whether in high or low markets, whether its hay, land, corn, cotton or a house. That's been my experience in life.
