supercharging an 8N?

So, in a thread under the heading "horsepower," Bill (from my fair state of Wisconsin) dropped this bombshell:

"Dell has a neat trick to supercharge that little N of yours with a 454 smog pump, a Jub carb and some brackets. Costs next to cheap."

WOW! This sounds neat-o! Does anyone have any more info? I"d appreciate it.

I asked for more info there, and was directed to a youtube video. Unfortunately, that was about the guy who stuck two 8N"s together (ie, what to do when you have two tractors, but only four rims and tires).

The Jub carburetor would be backwards for the linkage????

A carburetor works on vacuum. If you push air into the intake where is the vacuum going to come from????????? You'll be pressureizing the intake???????????

Dell recommended the NAA carburetor so as to reverse the air inlet toward the front mounted and belt driven pump.

So far so good.

However, no vintage Ford carburetor is sealed so one cannot pressureize the inlet much above atmospheric pressure unless the entire carburetor is inclosed within a pressurized chamber as was done with the supercharged Studebakers in the late 1950s - early 1960s.

On second thought, it might work, Louis, because the float bowl is vented to the air horn rather than the atmosphere as is the case in most automotive carbutetors.

HI All --

bear in mind what a superchager does -- it forces more aire fuel mixture into the combustion chamber. It can be put on between the carb and intake manifold. I did it for a friend of mine on his HD sportster years ago. very impressive power increase til the head blew.

Unlike a normally aspirated engine that relies on both atmospheric pressure (14.7 psi at sea level) and vacuum to fill the cylinders, a supercharger--also known as a blower--feeds both air and the delivered fuel at high pressure into the cylinders. The result is a level of volumetric efficiency surpassing that of a normally aspirated engine to produce more power for a tire-frying experience. So actually, the topic of supercharging is really about increasing volumetric efficiency.

Like all other forms of engine and vehicle modification, a supercharger unit should be matched to the vehicle's performance level, type of driving, and budget for optimal results. This means improving the cooling system, fuel system, ignition, engine components, drivetrain, suspension, and other parts to support and enable the added power.

So here's your short course in macro superchargers: how they work, the different types, and the components you'll need to change on your vehicle. So hang on because the info will blow you away.

Blower Basics
Superchargers fall largely into three design categories: Roots, centrifugal, and screw, the most traditional being the Roots. As noted, the key to making good power in an internal combustion engine is to increase the amount of air and fuel stuffed into each cylinder before every power stroke. This improves the combustion that produces the heat that is transferred into energy, translating to greater force on the piston and the connecting rod so that crankshaft turns with added power. This is basically the same reason larger-displacement engines make more power and torque than smaller ones; there is a larger supply of air and fuel within the cylinders.

Louis......google "Dirt cheap SuperCharger" by Steven A Richmond.

Flatheads are notorious poor breathers and by pumpin' more air into yer flathead N-Engine you will increase its power. Would be great for "braggin' rights", eh?

454-Chevy engine smog-pumps are "cheap" at the junque-yard, brackets are on you. NAA carb gitts the carb mouth facing the smog-pump output for eazier plumbing. Read some books on hot-rod supercharging. .......Dell, the huffer'n'puffer
 
The M-S carbs are pressure balanced designs, i.e., the fuel bowl is vented to the carb inlet so pressurizing the inlet still allows the carb to function as it always does. It"ll need bigger jets for the increased airflow and depending on the boost, the compression ratio may need to be reduced to hold down the gas temperatures and prevent knock. May need higher octane fuel also.
 
Sorry to revive a nearly 20 year old thread, but if someone were to be ambitious enough to give it the old “college try” what pulley diameter would they aim for for the smog pump?

I’m not looking necessarily for more power, but fewer instances of bogging and stalling under a heavy load. I also have enough gumption to just see what the effects are and test old Dell’s theory.

oh no not 96399Mopar all over again, no supercharger or turbo explosions! if you want more power do a flatead V8 or a cummins swap and sell the Flathead inline 4, heck I even seen somebody do an EV swap using a forklift motor. infinitely less risky than supercharging a tiny 23hp inline 4, probably easier too.. as for bogging and stalling under heavy load, maybe it just needs a tune up or less load.

When did your tractor have a precision valve job (NOT lapping!) last?
