Sweet Clover for Old

OLD! I remembered that you were looking for sweet clover seed, and ran into it, while looking thru my new crop of seed catologs. An Ore.company called Abundant life seeds, out of Cottage Grove Oregon, has it, under their cover crop listing. It looks pricy to me, but I guess that all clover seed is compareable to gold. They recommend 1 lb for 1000 sq feet. Looks like $8.75 a lb. or $143.85 for 25 lb bag. they do have a web site under www.Abundant Life Seeds.com I hope this helps, oh yeah, their ph # is 541-767-9606 Ralph

At that price I think they can keep it. I know last year I picked up some red clover seed for around $1.50 a pound. The area I want to seed is around 30 foot wide and maybe 500 foot long so that should figure out to be at or a little less then an acre for figuring I think. Plus I would also do the rape seed and red clover with it to get a mix of food plot there.
Thanks. Oh some one else sent me info on a place here in Missouri also

That's 15,000 sq ft which is a tad more than one third of an acre.
Wildlife habitat plats should be as close to square as possible, or no more than twicw as long as wide. Can you do a 150x100?

Nope this is a power line cut out so 30 foot wide and how ever long it is. I do not plan to plant the whole thing since they space the poles at around 300 foot per pole and I will be going to or between 2 or 3 of them so that would be in or a little less then 1000 foot long.
Now then I would like to know why you say they should be as close to square as possible.

Come on, What you really want is a roll in the clover!!!!!!Nixa seed and hardware in Nixa, Mo. down south of Springfield

Thanks that gives me option #3 for the seed if I can not find it at the local MFA oh wait I know the local one has no clue I meant the one in Lebanon which also has the rape seed I want for around $1.82 a lbs

Never heard of that one. Does it bring in the Deer which is the big thing I'm wanting to do since I have an idiot neighbor who feed his horses grain a couple times a week gives them no hay and the deer eat half the feed he gives to the horses because he dumps 50 lbs at a time and walks away so the deer have moved to his feeding site which makes it harder to hunt them

Albert Lea Seed House in southern MN has all sorts of native, clovers, and wildlife mixes to sell. They will deliver through UPS. Good old-time sort of place. You can look them up on the web, but might want to call in an order, they tend to have more (or ran out of something...) on the floor than the web site gets updated.

They have at times a 'plowdown' blend of clovers that you might like, if they have it this year.

Long narrow plots have more edge; that's what most books recommend. Thirty feet is a bit too narrow--makes it easy for predators--but you have to work with what you have. I hope to plant on the ROW that bissects or 80. They cut back the edges and dragged all the trees to a chipper. Losts of disturbance. I may just see what comes up from the seed bank.

Long and narrow is easily hunted by predators. They just run the downwind side and can smell anything in there, just like a good bird dog.
Pheasants and grouse like to get in the middle of lartge plot. Qauil more to the edge.
Deer prefer to travel in cover, then feed in larger open area where they can see predators coming.
Any reason not to plant corn in there? Or oats?

The power line cut out is on top of a hill, very poor soil and lots of rocks. So planting the clover will do a couple things. Help improve the soil, work as a cover crop to help stop erosion and also bring in the deer. Oh also in some places the soil may be only inches deep so can be a root problem also

sounds to me like a good place for vetch!good for all wildlife, easily planted, grows on the poorest soils, withstands drought as well as anything, seed easy to find on net, adds more n than just about any clover ,stays good for years if you can keep cows out.could become invasive in your area though,I dont recall where you are.In my experience out here in the drylands we have to plant clover on the better soil instead of the worst to ever get any kind of a stand at all..you might look for some winter peas also, northern or southern.they will grow on solid rock it seems like.and southern peas will reseed themselves at least as far north as mid kansas I'm told.I havnt bought any in awhile, but I thought every co-op in the world sold sweet clover seed!Ive bought it by the truckload at the local co-op.strange how all the stuff we used to plant is no longer heard of.guess I need to get around more and get caught up on all the modern stuff.

In my area crown vetch or also called Hairy vetch is one that no one want to plant because it has become a farmers bane and it taking over hay fields and almost nothing in the area will eat it. I have been fighting it for years now so nope not one I would even think about. Thanks any how

I tried a little plot of sweet clover instead of red interseeded in barley for plowdown once. The red clover grew fine but the sweet never showed at all.A salesman for another company told me that sweet clover seed has to be scarified before it will sprout and the seed I bought probably hadn"t been. You might want to check on that.
