Sweet corn picker

A guy called me about my corn picker and he wants to know if it will pick sweet corn. I never heard of anybody picking sweet corn. Any advise?

If it has stripper plates over the snapping rolls it may work on sweet corn at a low rpm.

If no stripping plates it will be tough on the ears.

In the "old" days they would use a regular picker minus the husking bed or just a conveyor in its place to move the cobs to the main elevator.
The newer more dedicated machines have elevators that raise and lower to minimize cob damage.

They used to have sweetcorn pickers. My dad used to raise 80 acres of sweetcorn for Stokley-VanCamp. They brought a 2 row mounted sweetcorn picker for us to use on dads 47 JD A. It was a lot faster than 2 bus loads of Mexicans to pick by hand.

BFO neighbor has a sweet corn snapper that works pretty good, but it's specially made for sweet corn. He plants about fifty acres and supplies quite a few places with fresh corn every day plus his own stand....

Joan of Ark cannery in Hoopston IL had them strung out to different farmers in the 60,and 70s. It was quit a site, watching trucks loads of sweet corn dumped on the concrete slab, and then a 4020 with a dozer blade pushing it into the pit conveyor.

Thanks to everyone! By the way, how did you get that handle? Do you have a 504? I do and would like to talk to someone who is familiar with them.

In the early 60's I seen a mounted picker on a tractor picking sweet corn in western Iowa. Couldn't believe. Wondered what they had to change to pick green ears.
