Sweet corn planting

North central Indiana. Local farmer planted sweet corn this morning and is covering the rows with plastic. Corn should be ready the last week of June.

That is pretty ambitious. I grow a lot of sweetcorn, but can usually plant first week of April and that puts it ready by June 25 or even sooner some years. Southern Indiana here. Low tunnels and floating row cover do work to make stuff earlier, but not sure it is worth the cost and the work. Just depends on whether you have the time to do it, then to take it up again. Time is the limiting factor in produce business, as it is in most industries, I suppose.

He plants every week up until the middle of summer and will have corn until late Sept some time. High dollar corn for the north side of Indianapolis and Carmel.

Local guy in western Washington begins planting when soil moisture allows, more every week. Corn usually available at his stand by late July, I bought the last of it last year on November 1. And ended up feeding it to the chickens.

Western Ky. here and not close to planting sweet corn. I have found that if I wait and let the ground warm up and then plant, which is usually mid to late April, I'll have a better stand and it will be ready in early-mid July. It grows off better than trying to rush it in the ground when the soil temp is too cool. We can have a problem with ear worms and little black bugs in the ear though. Any solutions for those two? (Granddaughter sells sweet corn) p.s. tractor related - planted with a Ford 861 pulling a 2 row Ford 309 drill that I restored.

My dad use to haul corn to the downtown indy market in the late 60s. Someone had to ride in back with a board to smack the locals as they tried to steal corn at stoplights.

No need to rush it here unless you like to plow it up a couple of times and re-plant...

Yep, I am around the Owensboro area, local farmer down the road planted field corn, but I think the soil temps are still too low. But they always try to plant the first corn.

When I was selling I would plant a small patch the end of April and then plant another field when that got an inch or two tall, etc,..seemed to be staged right at that interval, up to 7 plantings. If I got lucky and had a hot summer I would pick from the end of July till October, and by that time I couldn't wait to be done with it!
