I suggest putting through all the tests you can ! Clutch, brakes ,temperature ,coolant check for oil , put in gear punch brakes down hard as you can ,let out clutch see if it stalls . All the tests you can think of ,lights gages , viz.
once you shakes she is yours and the expense start ,battery viz.
Dont get caught up in the 560 ,be prepared to walk away.
Doesnt matter the use light or heavy you want a safe tractor

Dennis, I see a lot of clobbering of the English language here as it is conveyed in the written form. You put something in your reply I had to research more. Apparently viz. is something used in shorthand and is short for ..videlicet.. which appears to mean ..it is permitted to see.. Your use of it seems to replace quotations. Right or wrong I have no idea, just peaked my interest. I was about to add something about the Tractor Vet but I better not, I already have one long timer stirred up this morning.

To the OP on the subject of his TA if it is only working in low range of the TA it will have no engine braking either.

Remove pins in T/A clutch operating shaft and let it move free. This is shaft operating handle rod hooks to. Unless operating shaft is stuck it should be in higher speed. If not the T/A clutch pressure plate or clutch plate is bad. If it does happen to go in direct drive adjustments are needed to get T/A release bearing away from pressure plate fingers, willing to bet on damage to pressure plate though. Tractor doesn't even need a T/A clutch in it to pull unless the lockup part of T/A is bad. Needs the clutch to hold for direct drive. If T/A lockup is bad and T/A clutch bad the tractor won't pull any load. Owners have come up with ways to not fix the T/A or clutches. Have found T/A clutches or what's left of clutch plate bolted to clutch carrier, Straps bolted to clutch carrier to hold clutch Sollid so tractor would run in direct without a teardown. They torched the pressure plate to remove them.

560 dennis, thanks but i know what to check. I was wondering about the 460 because its a utilly and lot easier to get on than 560 row crop i have. About like crawling monkey bars for old man to get on it. Think about it first crawl over fast hitch then eigher get your leg between ta or pto levers. Just too much for me! I doubt i would ever get tank of gas through 460 but be nice to move things. Take care

Have you actually tried to get on a 460 Utility?

The area where your leg would swing through is very "busy" and there's not much room there. You need to step over the shifter and steering wheel to get on and off.

It just does not seem conducive to an old man who is having trouble getting on and off a Farmall. My Dad had bad arthritis and I just could not see him getting on and off a 460 Utility.

I've never been able to successfully get off one of these without almost falling. In fact the first time I did fall off the tractor. Your foot is trapped on the running board and you can't pivot it out and away from the tractor as you swing your leg to get off. My leg does not twist that far. The only way I could make it work was to put my knee down on the tire, pick my foot off the board, turn it, put it back down, and finish climbing off. Going forwards I'd end up sitting on the steering wheel to reposition my foot.
