tach question

check the end of the cable that hooks to the engine drive it will wear and slip inside the drive, also the cable it can have a worn place inside the housing catching on the cable either will cause the tach to bounce,you can check the tach by direct driving it slowly with a drill to see if it's working proper
 
When you re-assembled it. It is in a 'bind'... you need to take it back apart and make sure your re-assemble correctly...
