Folks I have purchased this tacho
Dwell meter so that I can finally set
idle and 1500 rpm along with max rpm.
It did not come with a manual and want
to be absolutely sure I connect it
correctly. Do not want to cook it
Any advice appreciated.

Your pictures don't show and without identifying it, one could be hard pressed to give more than general info. What brand and model number is your Dwell tach? Knowing that may help. Have you done a web search using that information to see if there is a manual, or instructions, for it on line? Some had just two leads Red (positive) and Black (negative), some could do more checks and had more leads. Which lead hooked to the coil hot side and which lead hooks to ground depends on the system it is to be used on.

if you have a negative ground system, black lead gets grounded to the engine and the red lead hooks to the wire that goes frommthe coil to the distributor. if you have a positive ground system, red goes to ground, black to distributor wire. dwell will read when the engine is running.

glennster has it right. I mis-spoke when I said hot side of the coil it is the distributor side primary terminal you hook to.

Very handy tool! Wish I had kept up with mine, no clue what ever happened to them, had a couple of them at one time.

One handy test it will do is check the dwell at various RPM. A loose distributor will cause the reading to vary, often happens at differing speeds.

I think the meter has an internal battery, used for the points resistance test. Might want to take a look inside, be sure it's not old and leaking.

I have the same one , no internal battery . I may still have the instructions , maybe ! I will look for them but can't recall seeing them for at least 15 years .

Well Kaesark it's official , I am a hoarder ! I bought that unit when I was 19 and still have the instructions .
Here they are , hope they are legible .
