Taser options

My wife surprised me, which isn't unusual. When I asked her what she wanted for Christmas this year she said she might like a taser. This surprised me because I'd offered to get her a pocket gun to carry and she'd always deferred. She's deputy assessor in our county and occasionally catches flack when she's out in the field, as well as in the office, on occasion. Anyway, I'm looking for recommendations regarding tasers, etc. something compact but potent. Any thoughts on the subject? TIA gm

Sorry, an overpowering urge to meme came over me.

Recognizing that you asked a straight up question on tasers and I can't address that, you may want to at least consider chem spray. They are cheaper, key ring sized, and work very well. So, appologies for not answering your taser question, but here is my 2 cents worth.

Would she need a carry permit for her job?
Ask local law enforcement for a recommendation?
From when I took CCW class, a taser with projectile electrodes is considered a dangerous weapon requiring carry authority. A stun gun, aka hot shot/livestock prod does not.

I have sold tasers in my gun store. Most cheap ones are not much more than a novelty. First off they are hand held and you have to be in reach of the assailant which mean they can grab you too. Second while the put on a good sparking show, they are not very disabling.

2 things I would suggest first what are the laws in your state relating to tasers. Second, ask the county sheriff what tasers they are using. Law enforcement tasers are disabling and are shot at the assailant at a distance that you can’t be touched by the assailant. Since she is working for the county, there may be some policy for her to carry a taser and/or financial assistance and/or training.

Taser or a STUN GUN? A taser is the one that shoots darts from a distance. A stun gun is a cattle prod on crack. You have to be close up to use it but there's no aiming required.

She probably wants a stun gun.

Electric discharge devices are almost useless against anyone wearing more than a tank top and cut-offs. Lined pants and a fall jacket just about negate their ability to even reach skin.

Then there are the legal ramifications, like @Tony in SD indicated. You might as well have a 1911 Compact or XD as your "stun-gun" instead.

I work for the county where I live in central MS. The first thing she needs to do is talk to the elected official she works for which i assume is the Tax Assessor on the county's policy is concerning OC spray, taser or firearm is for the Assessors office. Just because she has 'deputy' tacked on to her title doesnt clear her to carry while representing the county she works for. I'm sure the assessor can tell your wife if she is covered to carry county supplied OC spray as a county agent in the course of her job. If so, she will probably have to go through a training course at the county detention center. There will be classroom instruction and she will be sprayed with the same OC spray she will carry. If you go and buy her bear spray, a taser or a pistol that she is not legally qualified to carry as a county agent you will open you, your wife, the Tax Assessor and the county up for a law suit.

Years ago our rescue responded to disturbance call with our PD. On arrival there was this extremely tough, strong, looking young fellow with no shirt, camo pants and a military cap with "Ranger" on the front. He was sitting whining like a little kid. The other people told about the trouble he was causing, and that it continued upon the cop's arrival. Officer Jerry gave him a shot of mace.

This seems to be a pretty good option. It's advertised on the radio. If your serious about personal protection.

Be ready to defend yourself with the SABRE Home Defense Projectile Launcher—non-lethal and easy to use. Protect what matters most while minimizing accidental harm and staying prepared for multiple attackers.

It is the ONLY 0.68 caliber launcher with a 7-projectile magazine capacity that gives YOU 40% more stopping power!

Like electric bikes, it will only take time for the law to catch up to that loophole. It's not much different from a "motorized bicycle" which is now becoming more regulated by many entities.

The second amendment, in the most recent SCOTUS rulings, defines "arms" as anything that can be used offensively or defensively. That includes swords, pistols, crossbows, knives, rifles, long bows, spears, tasers, etc. When that law is equitably applied, toy guns will also be subject to the same scrutiny from those who do not understand the Constitution.
