Hi guys first of all I"m brand new at all of this so please bear with me. I have a TE20 which I bought last sept started fine mistfired a bit put new points and condensor in no prob for a couple of months then done it again put a new condensor in started again for a few days now won;t start at all. Checked coil ah no spark bought a new 12volt coil still won"t start checked for spark on coil again still no spark, checked all wiring seems in order theirs power going to the coil but nothing coming from coil can any one help its doing my head in. Cheers Ged

Ged.

Have you checked that you have power to the coil as it may be a faulty ignition switch?

Use a multimeter or volt meter across the negative (-) terminal on the coil, to the engine or tractor frame with ignition on - assuming your tractor is still positive (+) to earth/ground.

If necessary, make up a jumper wire direct from the negative (-) battery post, direct to the negative (-) terminal on the coil - assuming your tractor is still positive (+) to earth/ground and see if you have spark. But beware, the engine should be "live".

If your ground/earth battery lead is connected to the back of the dash, a bad earth is probably your problem. Connect the battery earth lead to the engine near the starter motor.

If you have power to the coil and no fire from it, check your points. You mentioned you had to change the condenser so I suspect your points are either burnedc up or dirty and not making a good contact. Post back and let us know.

hi guy"s

I"ve put new points on at the same time as the coil the tractor has a dynamo 12volts and not a alternator. going back upto the ranch tomorrow and try the things bob said to try and will post back tomorrow evening. Cheers Ged

Check the insulator on the short bolt which holds the points this goes through the side of the Distributor, it can wear away and short to ground. Be careful when you take the bolt out as the insulator is very small, if you drop it you will never find it. I take it that the tractor has been converted to 12 volts because it was 6 volt originally. Have you moved the Ground lead from the back of the Dash panel to one of the bolts close to the Starter. Make sure that the coil is wired correctly, if the tractor is wired positive to ground then the coil should be wired from ignition switch to the Negative terminal on the coil. and the opposite way if the tractor is wired negative to ground. If you still have problems with a good spark, try switching the low tension leads around and see in which position you get the best spark. You should have a bright blue spark not a feeble yellow one...ask again if you are still having [email protected]

This tractor should be wired Positive to Earth, but make sure that you fit a long earth lead as the dash is not making a good contact and it will try to earth through the Oil pressure pipe and the feed wire from the ignition switch should be attached to the Negative terminal on the [email protected]
