tea-20 3pt. hitch not working

Hello;
I am looking at a 55 tea-20.The guy said it runs fine and everything works except the 3 point hitch.He said he went out on a cold day and tried to raise it.He said he heard a bang and the hitch wouldn't raise.He also said he thinks there's water in the hydraulics.I would appreciate any help.

How cold is cold? Was something frozen? If there was frozen water in the hydraulics, something could have snapped. Where are you?

Only way to be sure is to open one of the the inspection plates on the side of the hydraulics below the seat on the sides just infront of the axles.
With the engine off.
Check the fluid and remember water may be sitting below the 10/50 engine oil that the hydraulics run on.
Drain a little out of the block below where the hydraulic pump is, if it is contaminated the oil will be very cloudy.
Ensure that the 3 point link position control lever is still connected to the valve at the very bottom of the hydraulic pump.
Moving the lever up and down will move the valve in and out of the bottom of the hydraulic pump.
Let us know what you find.

I'm in northeastern nova scotia canada.The tractor is in prince edward island.I can't pick it up for a couple of weeks.It was about -20 celcius when this happened.

If it was freezing and there was water in the hydraulic oil then almost certainly it was frozen and has broken something. The Pump will need to come out to be checked and the oil changed. It will also need the points of water entry sealing, this is usually the bottom of the Gear Change Lever and you fit a rubber boot to stop it. and there is the Seal on the Draft Spring at the back of the seat, this will be hard and worn but can be difficult to repair if everything is seized up with rust. Do not attempt to remove the Pump without some information of just how to do this or you will almost certainly break something. Now it's all about what exactly went the Bang.
