TEA 20 Clutch Release

We've got a TEA 20 (which, somewhere in its past, has been fitted with a red engine with a Lucas magneto) with a clutch problem.

Clutch is reluctant to release - to engage gears might take several depresses on the pedal and patience. And doesn't want to release once in motion - usually needs a hard stab on the brake pedal.

Pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

You most likely have oil on your clutch plate, coming from the gearbox input shaft seal inside the clutch housing. Splitting job I'm afraid. Once you have the shaft shaft removed you can use it as a clutch centralising tool. Look back in the archives for more details on how to do this job.

The Engine, someone has fitted is from a Massey-Ferguson 701 Baler. Apart from the ignition system and the Oil Pan it is the same as the standard tractor fitment. The Clutch Plate is sticking to the Flywheel, maybe due to some oil on the friction material OR the Drive shaft from the Clutch to the Transmission is contaminated in some way and will not allow the Clutch Plate to slide freely along the shaft. Whatever happens you need to split the tractor and then you will see just what is happening to the Clutch. If you need the information about how to remove the Engine and re-set the Clutch and the Engine Governor. Both these items need to be re-set as they have been disturbed when you took out the Engine, even a new Clutch will need to be adjusted, one out of the box will not do.
I suppose that the Free play in the Clutch pedal is correct, it should have a gap of 3/8" under the Footrest when the pedal is pressed to remove the free-play, if it is more than this it could result in the problem that you have.
