I have a TEA-20 the plate is missing with the tractor serial number I have the engine serial number S89863E can someone tell me what year this tractor is.

Kyle, I had a similar issue, my serial number plate is not the same age as the tractor. But this thread will help identify some casting numbers which are the date.

There are some very helpful and knowledgable guys here on this website.

Hello Kyle,

I can not say what year that engine is, I don't think anyone can. But, it is a fairly early engine. I also suspect it is an 80 mm engine.
In other words, I think it is a tractor made in early 1950, or earlier. Lower than serial number 175xxx at least.

On the right side of the centerhousing, under the seat, in front of the inspection cover (with the dipstick) you will find a number.

Like 6 8 9, and this means 6th of august 1949.
So, you have to find that number and figure it out, or come back with the number. In some cases the tractor may have gotten a new centerhouing from another tractor, and then it can be hopeless to determine the year.

Ferguson did not use engine number 1 in tractor number 2, engine number 2 in tractor number 2 and so forth. That means tractor number 65347 could have engine number S34763E, as the first tractors were made with Continental engines, and they had their own numbering system, and then in 1947 they started to mix with the Standard engine, so all TE 20 sent to the US came with Continental engines, and the TE 20 was stopped sold in Europe, they got the TEA 20 with the Standard engine. And, all TE, TEA, TED and the rest followed a continuing serial number, so the TE 20 did not have it's own number from 1 and up, and the TEA another number from 1 and up....
This means the engine numbers were way out of line with the tractor serial numbers after a while. And then when they started with the 85 mm parafin engine they got in real trouble, as they jumped to a higher number for those and continued with the lower numbers with the gas engines, but soon they run out of numbers for those, and they had to invent a new letter, so those engines were called SCxxxxxxE, and then then diesel came, and that was called SA I think, or it was vice versa.

And there is no record of what engine number were put in what tractor number.

Hope this helps. Got kinda long.

Take a look at Tractor Registry on the left under research and info. You should be able to get in the neighborhood but not exact as Bill said.

A picture tells a thousand words!

You [u:3308872843]MAY[/u:3308872843] have a date cast into the engine block, behind the generator:

"1 7 3" = 1 July 1953

You will have a date cast into the right side of the transmission housing:

"6 7 3" = 6 July 1953

Today - 11 July 2011 - is the 58th Birthday of my Little Grey Fergy! We've now been together for 25 years. :D

Providing the Engine is the original one and has not been changed, that engine was used in production around the end of September 1950. While they didn't use the engine in strict order of manufacture, they weren't that far out usually, they didn't have them stood around for a long period. Your engine was an 80mm gas unless it has been rebuilt to 85mm spec...John

Thank you all for your help the date on the tractor is 18/9/0 which should be 18 sep 1950 and the engine is 11/9/0 which should be 11 sep 1950
