TEA-20 Lucas Starter Needed

Hi all, my lucas starter drive went belly up. After a couple of phone calls to British car repair shops in Ohio I thought I'd located a place who thought they could fix it. A month went by and they ultimately called me to say they've called all over for parts and can't fix the drive unit. I guess my only recourse is to buy another starter. Does anyone have first hand experience with any companies which sell a quality built one?

[b:da5abd3b92]John[/b:da5abd3b92]. As you are in the USA I assume your TEA20 is 6 volt?

New Lucas starter pinions have not been available for many years, although in a recent thread someone suggested reproduction pinions may now be available?

Sparex sell TE20/TEA20 starter motors:
P/N S.41136 12 volt starter motor
P/N S.60354 6 volt starter motor

(Not sure if P/N S.60354 is for the Continental engine or Standard engine? May be the same starter?)

If your starter pinion is chewed up, chances are the flywheel ring gear is also damaged.

I just had the starter drive replaced on the 12 volt Lucas starter on my TEA 20. The shop owner said they repair several of them each year and they had the parts or could get them easily. Also had to get it rebuilt as the armature had shorted out. Repair for just the drive was about $120 Can. but with the armature being redone it came to $230.

John and Bob, thank you for the response. I originally called Sparex for the starter drive unit but they indicated that they don't stock those parts anymore. It appears I'll have to buy another starter. The one good thing is that Sparex is located in Aurora Ohio which is not far from me. Thanks again! John (51 TEA20 )

Aurora is the N. Am. wearhouse and they do not do retail sales there. You need a sparex dealer.

A great guy in the area (N. Youngstown) is Charlie Plott in Southington, OH. BTW make sure you go and pick it up from him, instead of having it shipped, as you want to see his private Ferguson Museum.

Visit the link and click the mesuem link for a pre-view. Charlie is about the nices guy you can meet.

Jeff, thanks for the info on Sparex in Aurora. I've only had my TEA20 for a few months and haven't had to buy any parts until now. Great reminder about Charlanne farms too.In the last few months I read some of your old posts and found out about Charlie's passion for the fergy's. I took a ride there on a couple of occasions but each time Charlie wasn't around. I will definitely give him a call. Thanks again ! John
