TEA 20 oil filter

I have recently purchased a TEA 20 fergie. My biggest issue is tracking down an oil filter for it. The filter housing hangs vertically from the engine block not at an angle like most others. The internal element itself is star shaped with what appears to be a felt material wrapped around a metal mesh frame with a central loacating spring, pulled together by the otter casing with a central bolt. Approx dimentions of the filter are 125mm Long x 76mm dia x 32mm inner hole both ends. So far i have established a manufacture date of the tractor as 8/04/48, with an original massey id plate with Serial Number TEA 33180, the engine is stamped S 9567E. So far i have had no luck tracking a replacement or generic filter for this housing. All listings found only show elements for the newer model angle housing, these don't fit. Thought of changing the housing to the newer style, again completly different bolt pattern and mounting setup.
All help would be greatly appreciated.

The later inclined type will directly interchange with the vertical type without any problems. The oil filter element for the vertical type has not been available for sometime. The block WILL accept the newer type...John

The old vertical style is still available with a new design, size and part number.
The old number is no longer a good number.

Hi John,

Have alraedy tried the new style filters, they are 30mm longer and have a smaller centre hole. Have also purchased a complete oil housing (angle style) to try and adapt to the engine block. Completely different bolt pattern and mounting face.

John is correct. Sparex quote only Part No: S.40535 for the oil filter element for all Standard engine TEA20s. (Massey Ferguson Part Nos 1881442M91, 1882916M1, 1882916M91, 1896000M91, 26560090, 825807M1, 825807M2, 894977M91).

Out of idle curiosity, I wonder if someone changed the outer filter spin on can? It is possible other filter cans would fit that engine. I'll measure the filter can on my TEA20 this evening and post the dimensions here.

Hi Bob,

All appears original with the housing. It is mounted to the engine block by four bolts where the angle type filters from memory are mounted with three bolts and a different pattern. When the can is removed from the pump assembly, the base that the centre bolt screws to to pull everything together and the cans outer cylinder can be separated into two pieces. Gaskets are required top and bottom to seal the housing. Rang the wife as the tractor is currently 4 hours away and she provided the following measurements for the can 140 L x 100 dia. Already tried Sparex filter S.40535, too long.

Latest update. My wife has found an ID plate under paint on the filter housing. It shows a TECALEMIT oil pump with an internal filter element number of FG 2330. This cross references to Wix filter number 51300. Length measurements are completely different to the sparex numbers used so far. May need to look into this a bit more indepth.

My TEA20 oil filter container is 7 inches long x 2 3/4 inches diameter, approx 175 mm x 70 mm.

There are four bolts in the oil filter housing on my '53 TEA20.

Your oil filter is certainly a different size. I wonder whether it is off another Standard engine installation, e.g. Vanguard or Triumph?

Tecalemit are a British company but I'm not sure they still make oil filters? I can't find a cross reference to FG 2330.

If Ms Wazza is that good you better send her around here. She can complete assembly and reinstallation of the engine in my E Type Jag, I have a few jobs needing attention on Fergy and by then I should have a sink full of plates in the kitchen.

The wages aren't much, but there is free cold beer in the garage fridge!

Hi Bob,
The picture you provided is definately different to the filter housing on my fergie. Have managed to cross reference the FG 2330 with a Wix filter, and found sizes. From here i have gone to the Ryco filters web site (http://www.rycofilters.com.au/) and managed to find three filters that may resolve my issue. Will try these and place a post and picture of the housing in a few weeks if sucessful, this will help others with the same problem.

Mrs Wazza is good, but you couldn't afford her come to think of it neither can I. As for the Jag the fergie and dishes there all yours. The beer is tempting though!!!!!!!!!.
Thanks everyone for your help, will let you know how i get on.

Cheers

I checked this in the Service Manual and it does state that It will interchange. Which inclined filter are you using, the one from a later TEA should fit the earlier TEA, I remember doing this quite often.....The later oil filter element will not fit the earlier one as you have already found out. I will send the copy to you if you wish, just drop me an email so I have your address. If I remember correctly there is an extra hole drilled in the Block that you use to attach the new filter assy. Is this new filter assy one from a Standard Engine or is it just a look-alike....John

What does this filter assy fit? It hasn't been available here for years, why they changed it in the first place I don't know, other than Tecalemit who made the later type wasn't too far from Coventry. Is it still listed as an MF part or not?....John
