I HAVE AN OLD FERGUSON WITH STANDARD ENGINE THAT HAS BEEN COMPLETELY OVER-HAULED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. I EVEN REPLACED THE OIL PUMP AND GOVERNOR PARTS. PROBLEM NOW IS THE OIL PRESSURE HAS DROPPED TO CENTER POSITION( NORMAL) AFTER IT GETS WARMED UP TO OPERATING TEMP AT FULL TROTTLE. WHEN BROUGHT DOWN TO IDLE IT DROPS WAY DOWN TO CLOSE TO THE ZERO. WHEN COLD IT RIDES OVER TO ALMOST PEGGED OUT. I DON'T REMEMBER THE OLD PUMP DOING THIS WAY. I HAD THE CRANK TURN AND BEARINGS (NEW) PUT IN AT TIME OF OVERHAUL. WHAT GIVES? MAYBE THE PUMP?

Did you fit another Pump or replace the Rotor Pack in the Pump as that is what would be needed, another Pump could be worn. Have you tried another pressure gauge on it, as that could be faulty. So if you haven't repaired the Pump you should do so. It could also be the rear bearing on the Camshaft that is leaking due to wear. It is from this bearing that the Gauge gets the pressure and if it leaks there will not be as much pressure. Have you checked if there is enough oil getting up to the valves as that would be a good indicator that the pressure is leaking away through the bearing....John

I REPLACED EVERYTHING, CAMSHAFT BEARING, MAIN BEARINGS, ROD BEARINGS, SLEEVES , PISTONS, GOVERNOR, OIL PUMP COMPLETE (NO KIT) VAVLES AND SEATS.

OIL COMES TO HEAD OK. IT DOESN"T SKIRT LIKE I SEN SOME BUT AMPLE SUPPLY SEEMS TO BE OK. WHEN FIRST STARTED UP IT IS FINE, AFTER15 - 20 MINUTES GAUGE GOES BY MIDWAY WHEN AT GOVERNED THROTTLE. WHEN IDLING IT DROPS TO ABOUT 1/4 FROM ZERO.

OTHER THAN THAT IT SEEMS OK.

THANKS,
TOM

You say you replaced the camshaft bearings, this engine does not have any bearings on the camshaft from new, it is bored straight into the block. Are you sure that the camshaft has had bearings fitted, has your engineering shop told you this, because it may not be true as it is quite a procedure to fit bearings in that block. Just where did you get a complete oil pump from as they haven't been available for years, do they have any more? If you didn't personally do the work on this engine relating to the camshaft and oil pump I think that I would be asking questions. Is it a Standard Motors engine or has it been fitted with a Continental engine, that would explain the oil pressure and camshaft bearings if it has. What is the engine number, it is on the left side in the area of the coil, either on a plate riveted to the Block or stamped in the block, that will tell us and we may have an answer for you then...John

JOHN,
I MAY BE WRONG ON THE CAM SHAFT BEARINGS. IT IS DEFINITELY A STANDARD ENGINE. I THINK IT WAS A COMPLETE OIL PUMP FROM YESTERDAY'S TRACTORS (SPAREX) I WAS THERE MOST EVERY EVENING CHECKING ON THE PROCESS. THE GUY THAT DID IT WAS AN EXPERT MECHANIC ON DIESEL AND GAS ENGINES. UNFORTUNATELY HE PASSED AWAY ABOUT 8 MONTHS AFTER THE REBUILD. HE WAS A VERY GOOD FRIEND OF MIND. HE WAS VERY CAREFULL IN THE HANDLING OF EVERY THING AS HE KINDA FELL IN LOVE WITH THE OLD TEA20. HE WOULD CALL ME IF HE SAW ANY THING THAT DIDN'T LOOK UP TO PAR. I CAN GET THE FOLDER OUT TONIGHT AND LOOK AT MY PARTS LISTS TO BE SURE WAS WAS PUT IN. I MAY HAVE IT MIXED UP WITH THE BACKHOE (FORD755C) HE REBUILT THE ENGINE ON ALSO ABOUT A YEAR BEFORE THE OLD TRACTOR REBUILD.

THANKS,
TOM

It would be a Rotor Pack that he has fitted to your engine (S61966) as Sparex don't do a complete oil pump. But if he did fit a Rotor Pack that should really be doing the work. Yes it is easy to get confused if you have had a couple of tractors repaired, but you are probably correct anyway, but it would be worth checking just to make sure that it was done, if it hasn't that would explain your problem. It could also be the relief valve on the Oil Filter that is sticking, it would be worth checking that as well. There must be an explanation if he has done all that work on it, the pressure is escaping somewhere.....John

JOHN,

CAN THE OIL PUMP BE ACCESSED WITH OUT TAKING THE PAN OFF? (SIDE DOOR ON PAN?) HOW DO I CHECK THE FILTER RELIEF VALVE?

THANKS,
TOM

You have to drop the oil pan to get at the Pump, can't really get to it through the filter/strainer side door. Oil filter relief valve screws into filter from outside, you will see a screwed "bolt" with a screwdriver slot and a locknut, unscrew the whole thing by turning the bottom one of the two nuts and the whole valve will come out, then you can take it apart and wash it propeley.....John
