Tea or ted 20

Hi all, I have a '49 ferguson serial no. 106201 & engine number s64328e. It has the 2 compartment fuel tank. Is it a tea or ted. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ben. Welcome to the greatest place for Fergy enthusiasts! There are a few Aussies here amongst a sea of friendly Yanks and the odd POM or two! :lol:

Sounds like it has a TED20 fuel tank but look on the data plate in front of the steering wheel - does it show TE[b:2d8931eda3]A[/b:2d8931eda3]106201 or TE[b:2d8931eda3]D[/b:2d8931eda3]106201?



There are a couple of other differences but they are irrelevant if the date plate doesn't show "TED".

TEA was gasoline only, so it sounds like it is a TED especially since it has two tanks.

Sounds like a 'tractor vaporizing oil' tvo engine, nether fish nor fowl. Yeah, so you'll have to wait till some poms like John or Sam wake up. Some other Strines might read this today too, probably a petrol Standard engine with a weird carb and oil heater affair. Got any pictures?

some TE's would start on gas then switch over to a lamp oil or something like that.Maybe more so during the war era

Same engine and carby but lower compression ratio. The TED20 had an additional heat shield added to the manifold but I've never seen a TED20 with the shield still in place. I have seen a TED double tank added to a TEA20, hence I am asking Ben to provide the prefix to his tractor Serial Number.

TED20 tractors are reasonably common in Australia.

Shell once advised me that Power Kerosene is 3/4 lighting kerosene and 1/4 standard petrol. There are other formulas on the internet for TVO but I think it is illegal to make TVO in the UK, for some odd reason, possibly to do with tax or excise?

Thanks all for your input. The reason I ask this question is that
I only have a partial/faint prefix of the te only , hence trying to
determine the a or d. I have been told by some it"s a and some
d. From all accounts the elderly previous owner had not
changed anything from when he bought it new. I will put up
some pics tonight.

One thing helps to determine the difference in a '49 Ferguson....The TEA, If you look on the spark plug side of the head it is uniform between the plugs....every one the same, but on an early TVO head there is a heavy casting between number 2 and 3 plug. I say the early head as later petrol only tractors and the Fordson Dexaster with the Standard petrol engine had this feature also. Look also for 2 extended studs on the manifold. These were used to bolt on the alloy heat shield. And of course the twin tank. TEDs in Britain had a temp gauge, TEAs had only a blanking plug. Look also on the carb. It will be stamped TVO on the top and will have a longer needle on the fuel screw. There are other non visual differences, like the low compression head etc. but his is the best guide I can give here....

If that is the original fuel tank, it is a TED20. But I think there is a heat shield missing from the carby area. John (UK) will know.

You can buy a new data plate for around $10. Pick the original:

Pull a plug out Ben and measure the depth of the threads in the head , TED will be much longer than a TEA. TEA is 1/2'' reach , TED 3/4''.

Are you saying the head on a TED20 is different to a TEA20? I thought the only difference was compression ratio.

Just measured it and there is 1/2" of thread. So going by this
it's an A.

Or got the wrong plugs?

A 1/2 inch reach plug will usually work where there should be a 3/4 inch reach plug.

It looks like a TED just because of the tank, there is no other reason to fit them. If you look at the Manifold above the Carburettor if it is smooth all the way up then it is a TED if it has a vertical ribs at this point, then it is a TEA. If you use it on Petrol only then treat the Engine settings as if it is a TEA, that means Plugs L86C short reach instead of long reach. When that tractor was made 18/8.1949, they didn't differentiate between engine models in the serial numbers so it is harder to work out unless you can see the engine.
