Techumseh 12 hp

Got a 12 HP techumseh set up to run on propane and wondering what needs to be changed besides the carb to run it on gasoline.

I do not know if what I am saying is true, so a hand full of salt is needed. If the engine was propane from the factory, it could/should have had higher compression than a gasoline engine. If it does, it might need premium fuel to avoid detonation. Just a guess!!! Jim

I'd save the hassle and just run it on propane.

Automotive engines have special valves and seats to take the higher temps of LP.

Propane engines from the factory usuall have a higher compression ratio than gasoline ones due to the higher octane numbers of propane and they usually run a little more advance on the spark timing. These conditions may require either an extra head gasket to lower the compression ratio and retarding the spark advanceif it produces a preignition knock running reegular gasoline or it may be that running pemium fuel will compensate for the difference.

Depends on how it was set up.

If it is an aftermarket, they may have just adapted to the existing carb. In that case it's just a matter of taking the propane parts off and supplying the carb with gasoline.

If it is factory, then a carb will need to be found and installed along with the proper governor linkage, which can be fabed if you are crafty enough.

The compression will probably be close enough unless the engine is pushed to its limit.

I've never seen a Tecumseh engine the carb didn't drip when not running.
Check out Amazon and see if they don't sell a cheap replacement carb.
Always send the carb back to Amazon if it doesn't work..
