Tecumseh HM80 starter

A friend who can no longer start his generator asked if I could find a used starter and install it for him. I am looking for leads and sources either online or somewhere here in the Ozarks.

It is a Sears generator, PN 143.948005. The engine is a Tecumseh HM80. I think it needs a flywheel and starter.

Not sure if the made a 12 volt starter for these engines. I only ever have seen the 110 volt starters which you can find very easy. Usually when you use a generator you don't have power so a 110 volt starter won't work. If you can get me the numbers off of the engine I could look up in my books to see if there was a 12 volt starter.

if the engine it like my tecumseh engined snow blower that has only the recoil starter, it will need a diferent flywheel with the ring gear on it. may be easier
to find a generator that is starter equipted

That Sears No is apparently th engine number. Do you have the Sear Generator No xxx.ooooooo? With Tec outta business it might be the oem gennie mfg could help.

Off the wall-110 starter and flywheel might be found(I know, hang on :))Dunno the wattage req for the 110 starter, but naybe a 12>110 inverter could could run the 110 off a 12V battery...

If you can put a belt pulley on it use a 12 volt starter from a garden tractor on it. Just get one that turns the right way. The old cub cadet starter generator on the kohlers is one. Depending on how you orientated it you can spin the motor in the proper direction. It would be bulky but would serve the purpose.

The Kohler starter generator turns the wrong direction.
One from a B&S or Wisconsin would turn the right direction. Getting a pulley on and true would be a challenge...

Well yes they do but if you are fabbing a mount anyway you just flip the starter the other way which will change the direction it spins the engine.

Looking at that model code/spec no,would not show a 12V starter as "that spec"engine didn't offer one.
Methinks one need go deeper into HM80s and find made for tractor etc, with 12V start, alternator flywheel and stator(charging system)which"should"
interchange w/most HM80s.

First inspect the flywheel - depending on the age of the HM80 it may already have starter teeth machined into it (the HM80 on my 90's era generator does). If not you'll need to swap in a flywheel that does.

12 volt Tecumseh starters also exist. They were used on electric start Tecumseh-powered Ariens riding mowers in the 70's and 80's. Also many of the cheap, "big box" brand riders built by MTD, Murray, etc. had 'em. These engines were all vertical shaft (TVM80, etc). But the starters on the vertical shaft engines will interchange with their horizontal shaft cousins.

Suggest visiting your local mower shop and see what's in his junk pile in back. Just make sure you look for 12 volt DC and not 120 volt AC starter (they appear almost identical!).

If you do find a starter & Flywheel be sure to get alternator that is under Flywheel. as to charge the bat. I changed a 8 HP BS 45kw over to eletric start used starter from an old riding mower. Left recoil starter on also.

The flywheel will not have a starter ring on it. You could NOT buy just a starter ring in the Tecumseh parts system when Tec. was in business. The few that I have done, I found old riding lawn mowers with tired/dead Tec. engines of the same HP as the generator engine. I then swapped all of the electric start parts from the dead engine to the engine on the generator.

I got a snow blower/tecumseh powered, with a bad starter /ring gear/ flywheel. Fortunately, i had a good used flywheel in stock. Then i set about looking for a 110 volt starter. HAH!
When i found out how much they cost, and how much the parts cost, i bolted on a 12 V. starter, and installed a solenoid and starter button. That made the engine turn, but now i find there is no spark. I used a Motorcycle type battery. So, when i get time, i'll check the ignition stuff. (Always some kind of set-back, ain't there??)

Google --Outdoor Distributors--I have gotten parts for my Tecumseh generator from them. I think they just sell new parts, no used stuff.
