Temp Gauge Install - YM1401D (how?)

tractorford

my ford 850 gonna git the dim mak
anyone know what the least surgically-invasive way would be to install a temp gauge on this thing.....

I do have the red-light indicator that has saved my butt a few times when I was brush hoggin a mountains worth-- but beyond that... could a fellar use the same 'apparatus' sending unit that activates the red light temp overhead bulb to instead be connected to a functioning temp gauge??

I also did buy an inline housing apparatus that would work if you cut the the radiator tube in half and slide the radiator tubes into the metal collar and then threaded in another temp sensing unit such like contraption but my attention went to my long heart-ulcer inducing ford these past few months now im trying to give the yanmar some good attention...

The sensor for the light will not work with the gauge. The sensor will have to match the gauge. Scary sounding in cutting the tube, however, I know i am not understanding and I know nothing about that type of sensor. My thinking has always been quite different on light verses gauge. I am much more likely to see a light burning than I am to see a gauge climbing. Just not my nature to keep a constant eye on the gauge.

Okay cool, thats some really good info- about the light sensor being incompatible with the temp gauge addition I suppose I could keep both the red light and the gauge if i can figure out what "generic-universal" temp coolant sender to use...

the other idea i had was to find out what parts are being used on a "near-peer" model of my 1401D ...like the ym165 or whatever it is... and see if i can just cannibalize that specific temp sender from that model... got som more noodling to do but will update this thread as i go incase anyone else feels randy enough to make this kinda thing happen heheh

the other "other" idea i just got... why not just get a mechanical temp gauge like my ford 850...... i would just need to find a bolt to remove on the engine where the coolant runs-- pretty sure i had to remove one to flush the old coolant out at one point--- and either just retap the threads in that hole if need be or on the coolant sender insert and cut off/shave down the probe length if needed and it would do........ or just keep the engine as it is and insert the properly sized coupler "Aluminum Black Water Temp Meter Temperature Gauge Joint Pipe" between the coolant hoses once theyre cut....

I have a JD 850, which is a 23 hp Yanmar, and like you, I did not trust the red light on the dash. I installed the radiator hose in-line unit like shown above. I just got a cheap electrical digital temp gauge from Amazon rather than the mechanical type. I had to get a NPT pipe tap to enlarge the hole for the sending unit a little, but otherwise the install was simple. I made a bracket below the dash and mounted a generic gauge housing . It works great. I've checked it against a infrared gun and it is reasonably accurate.

nice!! what digi temp gauge did you go with? i also had to do some npt tapping into the original threaded inlet port lol-- got it all ready and waiting to go with extra yanmar rad hose just in case** i just havent had time to surgery my yanmar yet- random life keeps popping up 🫠
