Temp. Range 460 Farmall

Can anyone tell me the operating range for a 460? Radiator cleaned, 3 different thermostats, 9 gallons of anti-freeze. Took water pump off, looked okay to me, everything was there, turned freely. There was an aftermarket temp gauge in it when I got it, says its running about 195 +/-. Feel like I couldn't work the tractor hard in the summer, would overheat. Not smoking, no water in oil, not losing coolant.

Thanks
Randy

Well, that is what most modern cars and trucks run at. I would say a tractor should be at 165. Just a guess but let us see what other folks say. A real gauge would have a "green" zone on it. Maybe about one third up the scale. We had a 460 on the farm many years ago but it is long gone.

Well i may be wrong here but i am thinking that they have either a 160-5 or a 180 stat in them . Soooooooo did ya ever think that maybe your cheap add on gauge is wrong ?? are you sure that your stat is in correctly?? You say it is NOt blowing water out so that sorta takes the head gskt being blow out or a cracked head. Now have you even checked the ing. timing to make sure that it is correct and set properly ?? Are you using the cheapest gas you can shove in the tank. On a 460 560 gasser the book calls for 89 octane . Are you trying to save a penny buy leaning out the mixture on the carb?? Keep in mind that lean is mean . And a lean burn gets hotter. Myself i would try and find a good gauge not some cheap China or India made one . Sure ain't like the good old days when you could get a Stewart and warner gauge that you could count on or even a Rochester gauge .

If you have a temp gun it will help determine your actual
temp , if not hook a load to it and pull it for a short
tome and watch the "temp gauge" ,195 will not hurt it but
mine rarely gets past 180 as I have 180degree thermostat
and an old IH gauge .

The first 2 thermostats were from NAPA, the one I replaced when I first got the tractor was stuck open visibly. Talked to an IH dealer and he said;"should fit and will fit" were 2 different things, so the one in it now is IH specific, 162 - 170 according to the book. Going to be replacing the gauges at some point next spring as $$ provides with actual IH gauges. Saw some on Ebay but they are from India, didnt know they had IH in India. Thanks for all the help, as I am new the New/Old tractors I will be pestering you more
