Temp. Sensor Location

I posted this on the Case forum and just learned that the Farmall IH forum might get me an answer.

Is the mounting for temp senders on D-XXX engines a 1/4 NPT female mounting point about 6 above the engine oil filter bracket? I have an empty hole there and can't find a sender. If that's the place, I guess the engine uses block temp rather than cooling temp to sense temperature as the hole is open, oil and coolant are performing normally, and it is basically a dry hole.

Thanks,
Mark

How would the coolant temp be functioning without a sender/sensor?

Have you looked at the cylinder head around the thermostat housing and upper radiator hose outlet from the head as was suggested to you in your post on the Case Forum?

If not there I would be looking around the entire top of the head, where most temp senders are found.

Yes sir I will. I didn't do a thorough job of looking around up there where they are located in my other equipment as the cowling is covering a lot of things. I just found it odd that there was this tapped hole in the block and nothing in it.

Thanks

I would not find an empty tapped hole odd as there are different attachment depending on where an engine is used. A 1/4 NPT tapped blind hole would be odd. Are you sure it is NPT, have you tried a NPT fitting in it? I am not saying it can't be NPT, but I would think something like 7/16 - 14 NC thread would be more likely.

After all chit chat I figured it was for an accessory and the PO removed the accessory and just left the hole open.

I went searching for the temp sensor and found it on top of the engine cooling manifold where the outlet water returns to the top of the radiator. Ordered the Ford sender and since it's smaller in diameter will adapter fit it to the tractors NPT socket.

You previously said the oil and coolant were working ok. If you are just looking to plug that blind hole in the block, why not just put a pipe plug in it if it is NPT?

If you are replacing the coolant sender, electric gauges and their senders have to match. Did you order the Case/IH sender #3127956R1 (or a direct interchange for that number), which should fit the current sender's hole, or just a generic Ford sender? If the ohm range of the sender you ordered doesn't match the gauge in your Case/IH 395, the gauge may not work properly.

I ordered the Ford sender like is in my 3000 to go with the instrument panel that fits that tractor. The iH is 1/2 NPT while the Ford is
1/4. Will just pickup a brass adapter and be done with it. Thanks
