Temp Sensor TO 30

Have really enjoyed reading many of your comments on the Ferguson Forum, and used some of them to help me with my '53 Fergie. Now I have a "help me" question, too! I am in the process of replacing the radiator, hoses, and cap, as well as adding a temp gauge and a thermostat which it did not have. While trying to install the gauge in the port on the side of the gooseneck where the upper radiator hose goes, I find that the sensing rod for the temp gauge, purchased from this forum's sponsor,is too long and hits the backside of the gooseneck before I can tighten the sensor all the way down. What to do? There appears to be no port available on the side of the engine. Appreciate anyone's help. Thanks.

If the sensor doesn"t hit the opposite side of the goose neck, you can use a drill to open the hole so it will fit in the opening. I have one I bought for my 53 to-30 and had that problem, but I put it on the 51- 30 and someone had already drilled the openning out, so it fit fine. Just make sure it"s not going all the way to the other side, other wise you"ll have to use a spacer that the sensor threads into (did that too). Good luck.

This is his problem.

There are ferrels that should fit ad provide the proper spacing. The issue I find is the threads are not correct.

Thanks for the replies. It is really two problems, now. The sensing tip (rod)goes through the smaller hole inside okay (doesn't need to be drilled out), but is so long that it hits the opposite side of the gooseneck before I can tighten it. I have just tried to use a brass coupling type spacer but it appears to have a bolt thread on one end and a different type of thread on the other. The sensor will screw nicely into one end of the spacer but the male end of the spacer won't screw into the port on the side of the gosseneck! But that does appear to be the way to go. Tomorrow I will look for a spacer (coupling) that is 5/8 inch, with a fine bolt thread on both ends, at an automotive store or machine shop. Will report on my success..or not! Thanks again.

No luck coming up with a spacer (ferrule) that had the right threads on both ends (fine, machine). jD, what did you use for a spacer? Jeff, do you think I'd have to get a ferrule made up? Thanks again for your help. Leighton in VT

Sorry Leighton, mine didn"t need a spacer, but the one I had was from NAPA, I think.

Thanks, Jd. I didn't try NAPA...And, you might know about the new radiator I bought for my TO 30. Unlike the old radiator which had the drain cock on the bottom front of the radiator, the drain on the new one is on the back side, near the bottom. Without trying to put it on yet, it sure seems that the right side 'strut?'(axle?)between the front tires will be on a collision course with the drain cock! This is a radiator advertised specifically for the TO 30. Any thoughts? Or, is there anyone else who has had experience with putting a new radiator in a TO 30 that may have suggestions? Thanks. After 7 stores checked, I finally found the extension fitting I needed to install the temp gauge. Thanks again for the help. this is my first time on the Forum, even though I have read it for several years. It's a great place to get help from experienced Ferguson owners! Leighton
