Temperature gauge response time question

How fast should a temperature gauge respond to a boiling water test? I have a JD 730 gas tractor that I installed a new thermostat and temperature gauge. No matter how long I run it, I can't see any movement in the temperature gauge. Before removing the thermostat to test it, I removed the gauge and put the end in boiling water. It took a min or more to even start to move, and another 2 o 3 min to move to get to 170 and another 3 min to get to 200. Can I assume this gauge is bad? What is a good quaility temp gauge to buy?

If your just running it with no load I doubt you will see it move.

I got a temp gauge from my local auto parts store. When the 160 degree thermostat opens, the gauge needle drops to 160 pretty much instantly. I'd say yours is either defective or junk to react that slowly.

Sorry, don't remember a brand name, but I'll look at it in a few to see if it shows one.

PS: duh me, mine is electrical not mechanical. Lol I forgot about those, oosp.

Edit: looks like mine is a MW.

How does it compare to the readings of the thermometer in the water?

I have a JD 50 and 620 and 720D and they all show temperature increase on the temp gauge when fast idling until the thermostat opens and then they settle in at 170 to 180.
Yes, there's something wrong with those tractors. Probably plugged radiator cores and/or sediment in the water jacket. Your 730 is in premium condition.

If your temperature gauge reads correct temperature, albeit slower than you'd like, there's nothing wrong with it. Even though it might take a minute to register, it's still going to register.

What's the range of the gauge?
If it starts at like 140° it may take awhile for the temperature to get above 140°.

Not familiar with the 730. But if the sending unit is located in the thermostat housing. Try moving it to another location on the engine block.

The gauge starts at 140. It is located right above the cylinder head.
