Would it be possible to buy just the sending unit and wire , without having to get the gauge also ? If so where?

As the others have posted, I am also 99% sure you have a mechanical gauge. If your gauge has one wire (actually it is a capillary tube between the gauge and sensor bulb) coming out the back, it is mechanical, not electric. An electric gauge would have two wires, one supplying power and one going to the sending unit. (Either type might have wires for a back light, not needed for howing temperature.)

The tube has no provision to disconnect it from the gauge or sensor. If you cut or kink the tube it is ruined. Some places and people have repaired these gauges but I doubt that would be a pratical option in your case. You will need to buy a complete mechanical gauge.

The temperature gauge on my '73 4000 is electrical. I'm not sure about those earlier models. I thought that the gauges on those earlier tractors that had a capilary tube were for oil pressure, not for temperature.

Mechanical temperature gauges use non replaceable sealed capillary tubes between the gauge and sensor bulb to contain the fluid inside the sensor bulb and tube.

Oil pressure gauges use a replaceable tube or hose between the gauge and oil port on the engine.
