My deep reduction gear on my 600 series for running things like a tiller has been called a Sherman gear by some, and that to my understanding is for a higher speed. At the same time,I have heard it called a Howard gear which I also believe should be proper. If Howard is correct was it made by the Howard tiller Co.?

it depends.. is the shifter up by the clutch.. IE.. in front of yer foot ( right or left side? ) or behind yer foot.. lie.. in the pto shifter cover.

if rear.. liekly a howard.. if fore, then could be sherman, f&t hupp.. etc.. etc..

if a shifter on a big lever under set in a spacer.. then everette.. etc...

ps.. shermans are a pre tranny .. and as thus, either speed up or slow down the input shaft.. and everything else aft of that. sherman are not specifically good for a tiller as ground speed and pto speed changes.

everette and howard slow ground speed but not pto speed...

here's some pics to help you decide what you may have...

last 3 pics are a sherman combo.. then hupp combo.. then hupp overdrive.. others are labeled..

The Howard on an 8N had the lever on the right side. When I took a Howard out of an NAA a few years ago, the lever was on the left side. That's the only Howard I've ever seen myself so my experience is limited.

probably same here. the pic I posted shows it on the right side in the dipstick cover. i think i may have been thinking about the live pto shifter instead, for the left side.. etc..

It is on the left side along with the pto lever.behind the foot. It is definitly for running my tiller as I have done it for years although that has come to an end,the tiller will be run by unother tractor. The 600 will no longer be a working tractor,it will be for parades, and to keep nice looking, you know cleaning up one of these is meant to stay looking good for awhile in my opinion.
