testing water pump

Water pump off a 1600 Diesel. Casting 190460. It is off the tractor while I sort out my coolant bubbling issues as discussed in another thread.

Is there any way to test if it is good or should be replaced/rebuilt while I have it off? It spins smooth. No bearing noise. It was not leaking either.

If the impellers are good,I'd put it back on. They're not terrible to get to if it does get loose on you later on. I can tell you from experience, getting that cast pulley off will likely end with you breaking it,and a rebuild kit nor a new pump come with one.
I took mine to the dealer to have them rebuild it because I was afraid of breaking the pulley, and they broke it trying to get it off.

Randy's right on that. I rebuilt the pump on my 1550 with parts from Kellog and bought 12 ton HF press. The press paid for itself with that job. Hard part is getting the pulley off. Measure the distance from the pulley to the back of the pump housing before you take it off. JS told me to but I didn't bother because the I&T manual had the dimension. But it was wrong. Had it on and off three times to get it right. I torched a notch in an old RR track plate for support and it was about the limit for the press.

Sounds good. I will clean it up, paint it and put it back on once the bubbling issue source is confirmed and resolved.

If you have bubbling in the coolant. You can tell if you have a leaking head gasket with a test kit for about $50 on ebay. That will tell you if there is coolant getting into the cylinders. I
didn't see on any posts if you have already pulled the head.
