testing Wisconsin alternator output

I have a VH4D Wisconsin engine on my Hesston windrower. I was mowing and the engine just died, and the battery was drained so it wouldn't turn over. I am assuming at this point the alt. is not charging. How do you check the output of the alt. on these? There is a voltage regulator on the side of the flywheel housing, and the alt. is is inside the housing running off of the flywheel.
 
get a manual for the engine.The alternators out put is ac and what you think is a regulator is just a rectifier.No room for guess work.
