seems like every one knows one. he's the antique tractor guru, but the tractor seems to end up here with its owner begging for help.

the more i read these threads, the more i wish some of these people ran away so fast they left Usain Bolt in the dust.

this week's example seems 'Just got my 2N back from the "mechanic" ug'.

i often wonder how they manage to cultivate the air of expertise when none of what they work on seems to run right, if at all.

luckily, the owners can come here and, hopefully, folks here can help separate the wheat from the "expert's" chaff :)

i was lucky to not be led astray by some legendary local neighborhood expert. MY guru, when i first got into the tractor biz, was/is the owner of the local auto parts store.

but, it was just my good fortune that, unlike so many other of these guys, this one seems to actually BE that guru that so many others swing and miss at being.

and plus, he owns an auto parts store, so when he says "you need one of these"- he can just grab one and hand it to me.

his guru-ness was cemented in my mind when he gave me a pointer on rebuilding the N that was right on target. turns out u do NOT need to remove the front end from the tractor to drop the oil pan :)

Hopefully, you accidentally chose your title with no intention. There is actually a new poster who is posting under that username. Maybe you would care to add a disclaimer for that. He seemed to be a somewhat conscientious newby that got bit by an honest mistake.
Adding to your topic, I am not sure why you want to be here if you want to select the individuals that you feel are worthy of assistance. Everyone is at different points in their tractor hobby quest. The thing that is most difficult for me is when multiple members tell someone they need to check X to properly diagnose their problems, yet everything else but that seems to be the focus of person who posted the problem.

Do you feel better now????

used red- LOL, i had no idea someone had chosen that as a username. my apologies. and who is selecting worthy people? everyone is worthy of being helped. Usain Bolt, in this example, is a non-YT member who has told the victim their tractor is good to go.

double07 - how about you? i guess you've never seen anyone join here telling us how their local expert went thru their tractor for them, but it still doesn't run, so they join here as a next step?

your assumption to my motivation here is wrong. period.

There's some pretty "touchy" folks on here today, maybe something to do with the upcoming eclipse???
i've got a LOT of driving to do tomorrow. my big challenge is to not eat all the snacks before i get there. i'll be right at about 4 minutes of totality :)

Although I see what you are saying now, that it was more about the mechanic he had his tractor at then the poster. I suppose if I had paid more attention to the title of his post as you stated it, that would probably steered me more in the right direction. However, knowing the content of his post it did seem to sway all over depending on the poster’s mood about his tractor. So, I painted with a broad brush and should not have my apologies.

I left this place years ago because of all the bickering and a few thinking they knew it all and looking down on others. I always just say what I have done, not as advice, just what worked for me. Now, even many years later, the same, as I have forgotten more than I know now and my eyes are so bad. Like blind leading the lost/unknowing. Sometimes even way off the actual focus, just jogged a memory. I hope I don't out stay my welcome but I have enjoyed being here for a few minutes. Some, I think is I enjoy the new YT. I think it has brought some together as we all, are more on the same level, learning something new. I hope it stays the same, or seems to me more inviting/welcoming. I know I miss a lot as not part of the old boy's but I remember the old days on the olde duffers forum here. (forgot the name)....James

In this modern world of touchy - feely I wish more people had had to go through boot camp.
If you asked or did dumb things you got screamed at and did 50 push ups.
If you acted haughty, proud or boastful you got screamed at and did 50 push ups.
If you acted sad or got hurt feelings you got screamed at and did 50 push ups.
It was rather surprising how after 12 weeks of push ups and screaming the proud boys were humbled, the cry babies had dry eyes and the dumb guys had wised up a lot.

I come here looking for answers. I do enjoy reading other's experiences from time to time. I get worn slick by people assuming other's motivation, intelligence, experience or anything else. It's often hard to wade through it all. I wish that if someone asks a question or makes a statement, responses would be something that adds value to their situation. I guess I can hope...

I grew up in a small rural town of about 6000 people. In the 9th grade, we had an elective called "Work Study". So if you wanted to be a nurse, you could go to the hospital and shadow a nurse every day for an hour. I selected, "Mechanic" and spent one hour daily working for one of the finest mechanic you have ever met. What a teacher!! He taught me a procedure and then observed me executing the procedure under heavy supervision and then went to the next lesson. When we got to doing valve jobs, he had me pulling heads, setting valve guides, grinding seats, facing (or replacing) valves and reassembly. Side note; he recieved a complaint along the way by someone that took their car in for valves and a ninth grader did the job!! I learned to weld in High school. I took a course on "Sheet Metal Fabrication".
But nowhere along the line did I have formal education on "Tractor Repair".
Would have loved it, but didn't happen and so far all has gone well!
Gotta be grateful for those that spent the time on us as young folks!!

That guy story's always never tell the hole story. It takes two willing participants and both have to be all in for a good outcome. Its rare that the low man that got the contract provide a satisfactory outcome. Most All those issues with your guy can be determined with the first conversation you have with your guy. If he tells you things you don't want to hear that's a good sign he's in it to satisfy both party's and not just after your money. I vest my victims YES I will tell them I am interrogating you, you are a victim if I determine you are a victim neither of us will be happy. The world is full of victims and those that will take their money both can be at blame.

I wish I could have came out of the gate with what it took at least 20 years to learn and cultivate I would have ran off haft the folks that came to my door. As I age and nearing the end its rare I let a victim in the door when I do my hearts not in it. If you are a victim you need to resolve why you are one, it take's two to tango.

I should not say this but most victims never recognize a dropped 3rd strike all they are looking for is to put the blame on someone else. They are looking for sympathy and know they will find it. They misplay every fly ball.
