Even later in life, it warms the heart for an engine to spit crud at you, it's just saying Hello.

After spraying lube into the cylinder again, soaking the main bearings in oil, changing the points, and trying for the third time to time the mag to the engine, the Regular came to life in a cloud of smoke and a shower of crud from the combustion chambers. At first it had no power at all, couldn't even drive it at full throttle with out it stalling. wouldn't run past 1/4 throttle without stalling. After running it for an hour it would idle right down and drive at the slowest RPMs I could get it to run. the only thing that concerns me is that the cooling system seems to be heating up really quickly. after running at an idle for 20 minutes there was a lot of steam coming from around the cap. I shut it down and started it several times and every time it fired back up, even after sitting for 2-1/2 hours. the real test well be does it start that easy after sitting over night?

That’s a thermosyphon system. So if the rad cores are plugged she will heat up pretty fast. Might have to unbolt the top and bottom tanks and Rod it out. Should be able to see the fires from the rad cap.

It will over heat if the circuit of water is broken, ie, not enough water for the water covering the core to touch the water at the radiator inlet.


Where the water circuit is unbroken, the water begins to circulate as soon as there is a temperature difference between the block and the radiator. If the two ends of the water are not connected, and expansion is not enough to close this gap, circulation is impossible and the water boils.

Fill it all the way up and let the excess drain down the overflow tube. If this doesn't solve the issue , then start taking things apart.
