thermostat gasket

on my C opened up thermostat housing to clean out the crud & spiders also to see if stat worked what would be the best material to make a new gasket
that goes between the top of the stat and were it sits in the housing ? their was just bits and pices left of the old one could you just use some permatex

Paper gasket material or a piece of cereal box would be the best things to use. Permatex may work, but I do not think that it would last extremely long with it being used on a pressurized cooling system.

Your best bet is the correct gasket which you should be able to get from an agco dealer. I do know the complete gasket set has them in it but that would cost way to much. I have also used silicone on one

Oh forgot tot say be sure to replace the old bolts and use an anti seize on them

Some farm supply stores have rolled gasket material if you need a quick reliable repair. Just set the flat side down on the gasket and draw around it. Paper gaskets are treated to resist chemicals like oil and gas. I've used them in a pinch. Gerard

Chase the threads in the boltholes, as well.
