Actually the first state to declare Christmas a public holiday was Alabama in 1836.
Louisiana & Arkansas followed in 1838.

If you read about the history of Christmas in American you can see we went from the Puritans outlawing Christmas in the 1600 to where we are today mostly because of children's books. That and materialism and advertising.

Near Truk atol, Central Pacific.
American submarine USS Skate puts a torpedo into Japanese super battleship Yamato causing extensive underwater damage and requiring her to go home to Japan for repairs. This hit caused much consternation in the Japanese high command as it made them realize Yamato's underwater armor design was flawed from the get go. The Americans were still unaware of what Yamato (and her sister ship Musashi) really were and assumed Skate had hit an older battleship. Yamato sends two destroyers to attack the submarine with depth charges but Skate gets away unharmed.
