Thomas skid steer

I have a 1970 Thomas skid steer my parts manual I have said it’s a 1200 gas model. Mine goes real good forward and backwards and right wheel works as it should but the left one doesn’t. I don’t know if they are belt or chain driven or something else. Can’t find much on the web for something this old. Thanks in advance

Ok I think because it’s hydrostatic then it’s all about the hydraulics.

Your post is a little confusing. If it moves good forwards and backwards, the left wheel must be working?

So not sure what you mean by "the left one doesn't." Can you explain a little better please? What, exactly, do you do, and what, exactly happens when you do it? What do you see? What do you feel? What do you HEAR?

I'm not familiar with your specific skidsteer but as a general rule the more modern wheel types have a hydraulic motor for each side, which chain drives both wheels. Older ones had the chain exposed. Most are now enclosed in an oil bath that is accessed through a panel behind/in between the wheels

You should be able to hear the motors whine as you move the lever. If you can hear the motor whine the left wheels not working is probably a broken chain.

I will try to be more clear. This is my first experience with a skid steer. When I want to turn right I push forward on my right hand handle and pull back on my left side handle and I do the opposite for a left turn. Whenever I push or pull the left side handle it makes a loud groaning noise and the engine wants to stall. Maybe I’m doing it all wrong. It seems to work ok if I am going forward at a decent speed but not when I am going real slow. Thank you for your help

I'm far from the first person to be giving out skidsteer operation advice, but how fast are you running the engine? You need to have the engine revved up especially when doing slow maneuvering.
