three pt log splitter

Forum Members,
Last month I pinched a nerve in the cervical region of the spine. Not a happy Medicare camper. Must be time to get a mechanized wood splitter.
Does anyone have a good plan for a splitter that will attach to an 8N Ford or know where to find one?
May also be looking for a Log Boss self contained splitter. Any help is appreciated.

If it were me I would get self contained one as you called it.something around 20 ton /5 to 6 hp a whole lot cheaper to run and you don't have to deal with the tractor exhaust or install a verticle exhaust.Twenty ton will split most anything you would want to split.

Look at it this way....unlike others our age, at least you were doing something active enough to pinch a nerve!

You need another tractor or a boy to split wood; the 8N won't do it.

Even if you add a remote, you won't be happy trying to run a log splitter on 1200 psi & 2.9 GPM's produced by the pump.

I've got a 20 ton electric that sits next to the woodshed. I mostly buy my firewood from a couple of young guys and have them just 1/2 or 1/4 the rounds (size depending) then just frolic away with splitting and stacking. Back 'in the day' I used to buck , split and deliver 30 to 40 cords a year for $, them days are GONE !!

How much wood do you want to split in a season - 1 cord or 30?

If you can find a PTO pump an 8N will do it just fine but no way the hyds it has from the factory will cut it. A splitter is something I have wanted to build but never got around to it yet. Sad thing is I have every thing I need plus some to build one of not 4 or more

TOH,
Usually cut and split 4-5 cords a year. My current supply is bigger- 12-18 inch diameter x 16 inches long dry oak. I would let my son split it but he is not experienced with the maul. He would do well with a splitter though.
One gets a little leery of heavy lifting after 3 plus weeks of a pinched nerve. It is getting better and hopefully I have gotten a little wiser. Thanks for the reply!

Old,
I have a heavy duty gear pump that was completely overhauled and a three way valve control unit. If I can not find a Log Boss splitter I will try to find an old non working splitter and modify til it works.

Dad trained me to split with a splitting axe + a couple of wedges and a sledge for the tough ones - 40 cords a year just to heat the old uninsulated farm house in upstate NY. After us boys left, my brother built him a self contained log splitter on wheels run by a fair sized Briggs & Stratton, and he used it for years.

I bought the 3-point hitch tractor-mounted splitter from Tractor Supply and added 11 GPM PTO-driven pump and oil reservoir tank and filter from Northern Tool catalog. With some small angle iron and welding, a pressure-limiting relief valve and a couple hoses, I ended up with a really good but somewhat expensive splitter that operates well with the NAA running at about 1000 RPM (or less if I'm having a lazy day). Made a small shelf to store the pump in front of oil tank when splitter is off the tractor......the unit goes on and off the tractor quickly and no hose disconnects are needed.

I have a pinched nerve in my neck that comes and goes - thankfullly more goes than comes at this point!! When it does materialize if I avoid aggravating it it usually subsides in a few weeks. Very unpredictable and plays havoc with my golf swing

If you already have a pump a 3pt splitter is not expensive. I have had this splitter (exact same machine with different badging) for over 20 years. I bought it at TSC when we first moved into our place and I had logs cut to clear the site stacked everywhere!!! It only cost ~$375 at that time and the first year I split and sold a half dozen cords to pay for it. Free and clear after that ;-) I'm still using it on a regular basis and it has had ZERO maintenance issues although it currently needs two new hoses....

I like my small two wheel trailer type wood splitter.

This leave my tractor and platform lift to pull logs, carry firewood, etc:

Then I just hook my splitter to the back of the platform lift an away I go.

My splitter has an 8hp engine, 22 ton rating, works good, yet light enough that I can move it around.

A wood splitter has a two way pump, high volume flow to move the ram out/in fast, then when it connects with the wood, it shifts into the low speed high pressure mode.

The tractor hyd pump does not have this feature.
